In the basement of his parents' Oakland Township home, tucked away in an area most aren't privy to see, Thiago is exhausting his love of physics on a project that has taken him more than two years and 1,000 hours to research and build -- a large, intricate machine that , on a small scale, creates nuclear fusion.

Nuclear fusion -- when atoms are combined to create energy -- is "kind of like the holy grail of physics," he said.

Hmmmmmm....... The kids at school call him a mad scientist and he is builing nuclear reacters in his parents' basement. Sounds like he's one of us :-)

The main about halfway down this page, Richard Hull, is one of my co-workers...a total aspie!

He demonstrated his working fusor to me in person, and it's quite a fascinating machine to say the least. The challenge however is that creating nuclear fusion is relatively easy. The problem is that it consumes more energy than it creates, and the reaction cannot be sustained, thus making it useless for an energy source. Richard's design is very similar to Thiago's I imagine Richard knows this kid. I'm gonna hafta ask him at work on Monday!

Here's Richard's page on fusion:
