Can you be Facebook friends with your NP?

If it's a medical professional I would say that the answer should be no.

There would be major ethical complications.

Couldn't you say the same with being friends with a teacher through facebook? that is not uncommon

Tricky... :? ... would you be friends in real life?
You've probably come up as suggestion on your NPs Facebook too. They haven't acted on it so maybe they see it as potentially problematic.
You could Facebook friend them and see if they accept. Afterall you aren't bound by any medical ethics that they may or may not be bound to. If your request is not accepted, don't take it personally.

It kind of depends. Are your facebook account clean enough that your employer could see it? Clean enough for your grandma? Clean enough for your kids?

..and even if all this is true, medical professionals aren't allowed to say hi to you on the street because that might tip of others who see it that you are a patient of theirs, and that is confidential. If you say hi first, however, they are allowed to say hi back. I don't know how it is where you live, or with NPs, but where I live, an NP would never accept a friend request from a patient, so there wouldn't be much point in sending one.

I think my NP and I could be very decent friends in real life outside of the NP - patient relationship. And it's extremely rare that I think that a person could be such.
Pretty much all I post on Facebook are animal pictures and articles on my special interest.
Everyone knows I'm diagnosed with Asperger's and I'm kind of even proud of the place I go to for therapy: its really an honest place.
