I always feel out of place when it comes to discussions with other aspies since most have interests in science or art. So are there any history addicts like myself out there?

I'm not sure if I'm a genuine nut or just a romanticizer but I have several old road maps from the 60s I like to look at and I frequently imagine the modern streets overlaid on the California El Camino Real, I've stopped at 17 of the 21 missions. I always wish I could travel to other times and 'vacation' there, maybe that does make me a history nut then

I like the 60s. I'm not into the hippie aspect of the 60s. I'm into the Mod aspect of the 60s. I'm a nut when it comes to things that are related to Swinging London, Mods and Carnaby Street. I'm also a diehard Kinks Fan as well. I live in a time warp and I wouldn't have it any other way. If people tell me that it would be easier and healthier for me to live in the present, I tell them to talk to the hand.

I'm all over the place. Anglo-Saxon England, Precolumbian Americas, Mesopotamia, WW1, colonial empires, it's pretty scattershot but yes, I really like history too. I tend to get into the less well-known areas. For instance, I know some Roman history, but I'm not as motivated with it - because it lacks mystery. I like the borderlands of historical knowledge. Where there is still much to be discovered.

Rise and fall of empires is interesting, but I also get into more obscure details. Economic history, daily life, techniques of crafting and construction, everyday objects and tools, etc

I watched the whole thing go down (through the media, of course, but I always take them with a grain of salt and do my own research). Interesting but to me it's not history til I'm dead.

As Russian history goes there are two periods I find really interesting: the revolution and the years that followed, and the time of the Varangians/Rus.

I am a bit obsessed with Latin American/Caribbean history at the moment.

Neolithic Europe interests me, too. As well as bit of African history (but more the culture of Africa than the history).

Must americans's think the USSR was just Communist. When in reality they where much more then that.

They were strong nationalists bent on Imperalistic conquest.

Depends on what period you're talking about. Stalin appealed to nationalism to motivate the people to fight and expand the power of the Soviet Union, but Lenin appealed to communist ideals to motivate the people to fight. His enemies appealed to nationalism.

Ivan doesn't interest me too much. Catherine's time was pretty interesting - she seems very much like the Russian version of Queen Victoria. But I don't know much more than the basics.

Peter the Great is pretty interesting. I know a lot of little details about him like the fact that he liked to be surrounded by dwarves and had a carriage pulled by a bear.

I'm mainly interested in the religions and tribes of Africa. I do read about the the ancient/Medieval civs, economy, linguistic groups, international relations, internal politics, music, artwork...okay, I'm a bit obsessed with Africa.

It's pretty far from being a narrow interest.

I could probably get more interested in it ... it's also a question of exposure to good resources, I find.

I live in in the African and Caribbean 'district' of my city. Kind of like a Little Italy or a Chinatown.

I can get lots of books on the artwork and material culture (including modern works) but books on the history of the continent are a bit scarce at the library.

I'm into history waaay too much for my own good. My specialisation is Latin America and the Caribbean - although I often study Africa and the Middle East (in that order) to a lesser extent also.

I don't have too much interest in Europe and Asia - probably because that was shoved down my throat growing up as the "all important" ones.

I wouldn't say Asia gets shoved down your throat. Especially the Asian countries that aren't China and Japan (though even those countries don't get shoved down anyone's throat).

When you go to high school in Australia they do - there is a huge focus on Asia here.

The government has really been pushing Asian Languages and Modern Asian Studies in the Universities here too.
