When watching videos or seeing pictures of people with Asperger's or HFA, I thought I noticed a pattern in what we all look like. I see a lot of dark hair, dark eyes, fair skin and a similarity around the eyes and eyebrows. In short, it seems that a lot of us could pass for siblings or at least 1st cousins. Is it just me, or a coincidence, or does anyone else see this?

I personally don't see it at all. I don't think there is a typical aspie look, we're not clones of one another, we're different people, from different cultures/ races.

You would probably see less diagnosed aspies from one particular part of the world, as opposed to America, or Britain, since... well face it, plenty of English speaking countries love mental health and equally love dishing out treatments. That's just my opinion, anyway.

I think there are a few aspie "looks" but they're in the eyes and general expression, and the way the person cares (or doesn't care) for their appearance, not the specific hair/eye color etc. There are so many different people in the world who have Asperger's, it's not possible for us all to look that alike.

I don't think there's an aspie "look" other than somewhat expressionless, non-athletic, un-tanned, wearing comfortable clothes, maybe a bit unfashionable, with unstyled or quickly styled hair and practical shoes/accessories. Plus probably a lot of us have that 8O zoned-out look in busy public places. You might be able to pick an autistic person out in a crowd, but it's not going to be their inherent genetic look or facial structure that gives them away.

From http://EzineArticles.com/5163093"

"People with autism have some facial similarities sometimes, especially in children. For example, high forehead, Low facial muscle tone, pale skin, ear slapping and wide eyes. Of course you can not diagnose autism or Asperger's just because of these facial traits, but, if 100 photos of faces are shown and ten of them were autistic, you could always pick up several."

From http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-504763_162- ... res-study/

"The study found children with autism had wider eyes, and a "broader upper face," compared with typically developing children. According to the study, children with autism also had a shorter middle region of the face - including the nose and cheeks - as well as a wider mouth and philtrum, the divot above the lip and below the nose. "

I also found it odd when I came across that AS partners site to hear partners stating their aspie partner had a certain "look", in particular, a "flat look like Bill Gates" or something along those lines. I guess that might be the low muscle tone thing?

I have also heard people say that Aspies have bags/lines under their eyes.

I am not sure about any of that stuff though - I havent really met that many aspies in real life.

My psych told me I have a very blank face with limited movement. I have a large forehead. People tend to like my eyes - I think they are "thinking" eyes. And most people think I look sad/bored when I am not at that time.

I do have dark hair, and dark blue eyes, and my face can get quite pale although I have olive skin and my body can get quite tanned.

I have low facial muscle tone, wide eyes and mouth, a little cheeks or nothing, and bags/lines under my eyes, the descriptions seems very familiar to me, i am self-diagnosed.

I think that's caused by lack of sleep.

Indeed, yes, that doesn't help! ;) This person seemed quite adamant about it, apart from the lack of sleep factor. Not sure if I would agree, though I HAVE always had lines under my eyes that seem more than they should be, even in photos of me when I was a kid. And even the days when I am well rested, they are still there.
It is just someone's observation though, I don't really agree nor disagree.

Only in the media, which is always wrong.

Congratulations, you're the 5000th person that has posted a thread like this!

Yes, there are some similarities but we're not all going to have them in common.

I don't have a high forehead, nor a big head. My eyes are kind of...looking constantly stoned. But I make too many expressions which hardly fit my mood. OK, I style my hair in about 10 seconds and my clothes are comfortable, but that's a sensory and ADHD issue, not physical traits that I can't change.

My hair is a light color, and I have green eyes - with no brown, just pure green.
