I'm guilty of hand-flapping... I started doing it last year, and I do it when I feel uncomfortable or my body feels tense. I only do this when I'm alone or with close friends, and not for very long (a few seconds), and I can stop at any time. So, my question is: have any of you heard of hand-flapping without autism or a sensory issue?
I find it soothing. I am not against stimming as a coping mechanism for anyone (provided it doesn't cause bigger problems), even if it may look odd. However, because diagnoses have come and gone with me over the years, I do not feel confident in saying it's because I have ASD.

Yup, you'll see it in NT toddlers all the time. And adults, for that matter, when they're very excited. Look at videos of people winning the lottery; I guarantee you'll see at least some hand-flapping.

Yeah if you look out for it, it's there. Look for any footage of 9 year old girls, at a concert with the latest heart throb / boyband and you'll see plenty of hand flapping.

If you're happy and you know it, flap your hands.
If you're happy and you know it, flap your hands.
If you're happy and you know it,
And you really want to show it,
If you're happy and you know it, flap your hands.

That's awesome!
