Most of you are too young to have encountered Republicans of a different sort than you currently see. Did you know that Abe Lincoln was the first Republican president. The Republicans back then saved the Union from dissolution.

At a later time Howard Taft and Herbert Hoover and Calvin Coolide practiced fiscal sanity and kept the currency of the U.S. sound. That is why we did not end up like the Weimar Republic. Later on Republican of the like of Bob Taft and Barry Goldwater counciled strength and firmness in the face of the threat posed by the Soviet Union and its allies. Taft kept Democrats like Harry Truman honest.

Unfortunately in the past 40 years the Republican Party has been hijacked by ultra religious reactionaries. It is also the case the the Democrat Party has by hijacked by leftish extremists who want to turn and who have turned the U.S into a Welfare Nanny State. It was not always thus. We had solid folk like Harry Truman who came into the Whitehouse a man of modest means and modest ambition and left the Whitehouse in the same state.

Our political ambience has gone into the crapper during my lifetime. I have seen the political scene change from one driven by reasonable differences between people to a melee and a mud wrestling match. Politics has become a loathsome disease and an abomination.

While poor socialist reactionaries automatically vote Democratic.

Is there something wrong with being wealthy? I don't think so. If one has come his wealth honestly and productively he has done both himself and the nation a service. If you are referring to the Crony Pseudo Capitalists, I share your distaste. The Republican party has become a haven for Corporate Welfare Staters who are intent on privatizing profits and socializing loses. When they win, they get to keep the goodies for themselves. When they lose, we get to pay the price.

But do not praise their opposition on the left too energetically. The Welfare Staters of the left want to turn the dispossessed and the not so well off into permanent dependents sucking at the government teat. That bodes unwell for the truly productive folk of the nation. The Nanny State Left Wing is leading the country into a degree of debt and deficit that we cannot possibly repay. Both the Nannies and the Cronies will be the ruination of us.

Calling Obama a left wing extremist will never stop being hilariously ridiculous... Just saying.

Really? He is carrying out out the New Deal with a vengence. Even so, he has manage to lay his head on the breast of the Crony Capitalists. Obama speaks with forked tongue of a serpent. He is a liar and a con-man.

Yes, that's what I'm referring to.

It's called "Plutocracy".

Becoming wealthy is fine, but turning the government into a plutocratic country club is just plain wrong.

Your guy Obama is at best (or at worst) a center-right capitalist crony. That people in the US would call him a left-wing extremist is scary , because it shows how very right-wing the place is.

I am in full agreement. By the way, if Obama wins the Plutocrats will still be sitting behind the wheel with their foot on both the brake and the accelerator. Obama is no friend to the well being of this Nation. But neither is Mitt the Magic Mormon.

Obama will drive us off the cliff. Mitt will be less speedy to do so, but I do not see much promise in him either.

Vote on Nov. 6. Choose the Lesser of Evils Yet Again.

I don't have the life experience of ruveyn, but that post pretty much explains why the current fads of "liberal" and "conservative" have an intellectual depth equivalent to watching a rerun of Jersey Shore after downing 4 six-packs of Bud and snorting 5 lines of coke...

(Ripley's) Believe it or not... There was a time when liberalism and conservatism was pretty much the same thing (classical liberalism)... Then someone started taking those labels *seriously*.

If I had the power to bring just *one* person back to life, I'd choose the great Republican president Dwight D. Eisenhower (honestly, I'd probably choose John von Neumann, but that would be off-topic).

Unfortunately so. We are following in the footsteps of (once) Great Britain.

Somebody needs to tell black people that. Funny that the most religious people in the country, black people, are the most loyal Democrats.

How right wing is Europe then when they have actual racist parties with power?
