I used to be a huge fan and I have all their albums. I will still listen to them occasionally. Check out Images and Words and Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence.

Some other cool bands I didn't see mentioned include Ion Dissonance, Aghora and Cynic. I also love Meshuggah, Strapping Young Lad, Sleepytime Gorilla Musuem and The Dillinger Escape Plan.

Anyone here listen to hardcore noise like Merzbow or The Locust, or hardcore deconstructive jazz like Naked City or John Zorn?

absolutely. i love merzbow (i haven't heard the locust, i'll have to check that out), i listen to a lot of noise, powernoise and idm/drill n bass (a number of musicians/bands seem to kind of move between the three styles from one release to another), some of my favorites of which are:

a lot of the stuff on the cold meat industry label (brighter death now, mental destruction, atrium carceri, and others)
architect
imminent starvation
winterkalte
kiew
venetian snares
aphex
squarepusher
esplendor geometrico
muslimgauze
nurse with wound

i love john zorn, it's tough to keep on top of all of his releases, though. i have stuff by naked city, masada, painkiller, cobra, and a couple of albums just under his name. i also like ornette coleman, but beyond that, i don't know much other deconstructive jazz. do you have any recommendations?

The only Agalloch album I have right now is The Mantle (the others are on order), but I like it a lot.

Recently I've been all about the instru-metal, Pelican, Red Sparrowes, Russian Circles, I just can't get enough.

....Albert "motherfuckin" Ayler, Thelonius Monk(not deconstructive, more beatiful melodies made out of dissonance), Mingus

...for metal, I like the older bands who aren't so d + d(or Hard rock/metal): Sabbath, Thin Lizzy, Judas Priest, Kiss, Iron Maiden(dianno' was a way better singer)

....Hardcore: Minor Threat, Dicks, Necros,Naked Raygun,D.O.A, (I go on and list 1000 more, it's been my staple genre since I was 13)

I HATE ALMOST ALL metal, however I DO kind of like:

  • a band called "Kamelot" -- not sure if anyone has heard of them...
  • Metallica's "No Leaf Clover"
  • Rob Zombie's "Scum Of The Earth"

Therion

A European band that has a chorus of Opera singing over a thrash band. I love them. The most Gothic music imagineable. Imagine "Carmina Burana" with moshing...
