I think that whatever ASD she had as a child was very mild. While it is good that successful celebrities are coming out about this, I feel that what she had would be on the level of much higher functioning Asperger's by today's standards. It is good that she is advocating and presenting a positive image of autism, and using the "A-word" rather than "Asperger's".

Asperger's wasn't being handed out as a diagnosis around the time she was a kid. If she were labeled autistic her impairments must have been significant. Doctors had recommended she be institutionalized as a kid, but I don't think she was.

What do you think? Is she describing her autism or her social anxiety? I wasn't convinced she has autism after reading this article.

I think that she was diagnosed by a mental health professional... a person that has 12 years of education and practice (minimum) to make this diagnosis... and that we, just reading an article and not interacting with her, have not the experience, the education nor the interaction to overturn her diagnosis...

1989 interview

Of course I can't diagnose based on a 10 minute interview. I saw a person stimming more and more frantically and a person who by the end was desperately trying to control a meltdown on live TV. Eye contact was poor. Painful to watch actually.

Agreed... When she starts jiggling her leg and wringing her hands, I feel it and have to look away.
