Clearly the world's a disc held on the back of 4 giant elephants standing on the back of a great space turtle called Great A'Tuin!

Nobody read Terry Pratchett's Discworld books? He's detailed it all in there

Nah! the world is flat and circular. it rides the backs of four great elephants which in turn stand atop the great space turtle A'tuin.

all this reminds me of a great book, "Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds". Written 19C but republished recently. Should be in decent libraries.
