No offense intended to everyone here, but online "socialization" can never be a a replacement for real world relationships.
Online "friends" whom you have never met face to face, are not truly friends, IMO. They are merely light acquaintances.
Things like Facebook, have only served to make the world more superficial and push people further apart. How often do you see people buried in their phone, facebooking, texting and twittering, completely ignoring those in their immediate physical surroundings?

Honestly, I don't even view WP as socializing, it's just interesting stuff to read.

but it is still a hell of a lot better than nothing else, for those of us lacking the social genes in dealing with actual people f2f.

I guess I'm one of those who have an emotional disconnect with online interactions.
I know intellectually that there are people on the other end. It just doesn't feel that way.
Text is just text, dead & cold.

I guess the difference between me and you is that I know emotionally that there are people on the other end. in any case, one uses one's intellect to render cold pixilated text with the warmth of human emotion.

Personally, I like communicating with people on WP.

I don't talk easily to people in real life, and besides, most people here have a similar lack of social skills as me.

Maybe not as bad, but I feel like people here understand.

Anytime I'm on a bus or whatever it's amazing how many people are on their phone texting someone.

I sent only one text in my life, and that was to the power company by mistake. I was testing a new cell phone, ineptly.

I mean, sometimes I'd try to talk to a stranger if it feels appropriate but it doesn't seem to work all that well. Most people are nice but it's hard to make them want to be your friend.

I have no idea how that works. When it comes to social skill it's like stumbling in a minefield in the dark.
