It's really weird but every time I eat anything tomato based just recently, my eyebrows start sweating and my ears go cold.

I was wondering if anyone else has encountered this?

Is it related to anything autistic or is it just me?

Weird, maybe it's an allergy.

I've never heard of that reaction before. Very unusual.

I love tomatoes, BTW. I eat them like apples. For a while they were a special interest of mine. I had to study all the varieties for a novella I was writing.

Tomatoes are evil.

I had huge sensory issues with them as a child, because they were so squishy, but as an adult I can't get enough of them. As far as I'm concerned, there isn't a dish on the planet that can't be improved with a can of Ro*tel.

I absolutely hate the new Genetically Modified strains though - while they're very firm, they have no flavor whatsoever. Fortunately, I live in an area where the old fashioned kind are still widely grown in backyard gardens and available at roadside farmer's markets. My parents were just telling me the other day that one of their friends who'd been keeping us all supplied with fresh real tomatoes for years isn't going to be tending their vegetable garden anymore. :(

I recently found out that tomatoes are antihistamine. That would explain my obsession with them - allergies. And it explains why I don't miss them much in the winter but crave them the rest of the time.

I have one of those selectively eidetic memories, so I remember reading this in a fortune cookie when I was 9:

"Poor man squeeze penny. Rich man squeeze tomato."

It still doesn't make much sense to me.

 In that case, 'Tomato' is a euphemism for an attractive woman. I don't think that has been in common slang usage since the 1920s or 30s, but you'll hear it occasionally in old B/W gangster films.

It was once often heard in phrases like "That's one spicy tomato!" I've even heard it as a question at least once, as in "Who's the tomato?" after a smartly coiffed tart had left the room.

I know a lot of autistic people are very sensitive to food and can have dramatic reactions to certain types.

Hey, can I use that for my Catsup King novel?

Edit - I forgot to change the avatar! I'll get around to it.

Catsup King? May I ask what the novel is about? The title has me curious. :)

It's about a guy who makes catsup.

Well, I never would have thought to make a book about that, so you get points for creativity on that one! :o

Edit: I'm not being sarcastic, by the way. I really wouldn't have ever picked catsup-making as a topic for a story! I genuinely think it could be a creative and interesting story, in the right hands.

I didn't take it as sarcastic - I hope he's in the right hands! It's really about more than catsup, of course, but that's what he does for a living.
