The Puritans drank a lot of beer. They even gave it to children, though much diluted.
It wasn't because they were a bunch of drunkards, it was because it was safer to drink beer (which contained water that had been boiled) than water they found in streams.

Abraham Lincoln's coffin was opened in 1901 after an attempt was made to steal his body. His close friends and family were there and steeled themselves for what they would see when the lid was removed. They were all shocked to see that Abe was in pretty good shape. His face was recognizable and his beard was intact. What they hadn't anticipated was the fact that Abe had been embalmed and re-embalmed when the funeral train was bearing him to his final rest, and was just short of being mummified.
