I've seen it happen.

I had an Aunt Martha and Uncle Harry, when they married they were poor and could only afford one wedding ring, so Martha got the ring and on the day of the wedding Harry got a picture of a ring tattooed on his ring finger. Marriages in those days were meant to last. They were together for over sixty years but eventually they had to move out of their house and into an old people's home due to advancing age.

Harry went first, he died in the night and the manageress of the home broke the news to Aunt Martha. "I'm glad he went first" she said, and she was dead by teatime.

Death can be lovely and loving. I should be so lucky.
