I'm uncoordinated and I have very slow reaction times compared to a lot of people. As a result, this actually makes a lot of video games, especially multiplayer first person shooters, incredibly frustrating to play. I love video games, but I think I would love them a lot more if I didn't have such terrible reflexes.

I've heard that this may have something to do with me being an aspie. Are any other aspies here hampered by terrible reflexes? Also, what are some good games that do NOT require fast reflexes or reactions, but aren't tediously boring either?

its definitely not just aspies;am EXACTLY the same even with gaming, absolutely suck at gaming-its the main reason that used to use a action replay [US=game shark?] cheat card on several platforms-that thing was amazing though to many codes and itd crash the game.

FPS-which obviously really needs good tracking skills and response times is the favourite game type of mine but have always got it on the easiest mode available.
some FPS have ridiculously hard AI like saurbraten but cannot just stop playing it because its amazing.

am guessing this might be to do with executive dysfunction seeing as its not only cross spectrum but have heard of it affecting people with plain ADHD to which is also based around executive dysfunction.

and,not many people will admit to being crap at gaming for whatever reason, its nice to see am not the only one. :P

I have slow reaction times when it comes to socialising and I miss out on cues, then I get overloaded with different people speaking at once. I'm very clumsy too. I walk into objects and only realise that they are there when I come into contact with them. I'm often unaware of my environment and could walk out into the middle of the road without realising where I am. I trip over my own feet a lot and walk into people regularly too.

The only occasion where I respond quickly is during a judo match, during randori or a tournament. I'm often able to predict my opponent's moves accurately from their body language and quickly sidestep out of their way, and avoid being thrown or pinned to the ground when that technique is used. I don't know if this counts as quick reaction times. I've actually been told that I have very graceful and fluid movements when I am performing judo.

Lately I've been playing Unreal Tournament 2004's singleplayer mode, and while I sometimes amaze myself with the reflex shots I can pull off (gotta love the shock rifle :D), much of the time I get really frustrated with how often I get killed, and I find that the more frustrated I get, the worse I play, leading to a sort of vicious cycle. I'm not playing on the easiest difficulty though; yesterday I was playing on Adept, but I decided to dial it back to Skilled, and while it suits me somewhat better, I'm still not that great at it. I'm just glad UT2004 allows you to customize things like the size and colour of your aiming reticle, the sensitivity of the dodging controls, how the firing modes of the different weapons are mapped, and other things like that. Most games aren't so generous and expect you to play with similar settings to other players. :(

I find the one thing my slow reflexes frustrate me with the most is sniping, especially on TF2. I'll line up a shot on someone, and half a second before I fire, often right while I'm clicking the mouse button, the person I was aiming at will have already killed me. It varies from game to game, and some games have better sniper weapons than others.

I'm also quite clumsy, and I'm terrible at sports as well, though part of the reason for the latter is just because I've always found sports to be dumb in the first place. What is dyspraxia, btw?

My depth perception stinks as well. I didn't actually realize it was much of a problem though until a few years ago. Same with my peripheral vision, which for a long time I was convinced I didn't even have.

I got very good reaction time/reflex (even too good - yesterday I for example actually hit my parents friend because he scared me, he had no time to jump off or cover. Remember - don't suddenly touch an aspie especially when there is a wasp flying around... ) but I am clumsy. My aim is not too good and I can hit wrong button or unintentionally hit a button twice when I play a game.

You would laugh if you saw me trying to hit a baseball. Too slow.

On the other hand, if something is dropped, the automatic movement I make to catch it is very immediate and fast.

Terrible reaction times but that doesn't seem to matter as I can always turn down the difficulty settings on whatever video game I'm playing (such as Bioshock Infinite which although incredibly fun it is not incredibly difficult). Ever since learning to touch type, playing on a PC is easy but I've always found console controllers difficult. Can't break the habit of touch typing with my two index fingers though, however hard I try.

I'm good at some types of video games, but terrible at others. I never liked multi-player games, or shooter games. I like puzzle games or adventure games, or games that combine both like the Zelda series.

A really good, well-designed single player game allows you to build up your reflexes to get faster and faster, because you can proceed at your own pace. Multi-player games force you to play at another person's speed.

I haven't played any console games in a long time, I only play app games. I like the ones designed by King (Candy Crush, Pet Rescue, Farm Heroes) and Team Lava (Bubble Mania, Candy Mania, Jewel Mania). Those are all match-3 puzzle games. None of them require fast reflexes, except when you occasionally have to do a timed level on some of them, but otherwise it is usually better to take your time to plan your moves. But those might not be the kind of games you like.

I like games like Hexic, and I have played a few Bejeweled clones in my time, but I was thinking more along the lines of some turn based strategy games. I want to see a turn based version of StarCraft or Command & Conquer. I'm kind of cursed in that I enjoy games with fast, arcade action, despite the fact that I suck at them. In games that have them I pretty much rely on having access to things like lock-on targeting, screen nukes, health and damage upgrades, and really anything else that can give me an edge to make up for my poor reflexes and coordination. The only time I ever use outright cheats is when I'm playing singleplayer games, and even then I don't use them nearly as much as I did when I was younger.

I thought I did until I took a test. Apparently, my reaction time is normal. :D

Not sure . When I was younger I had terrible co-ordination but pretty good reflexes - I got a black belt in martial arts not because I was co-ordinated but because the target was generally 6' by 2' and I could generally hit it somewhere! :D But complicated breaks and take downs - nah hopeless.
