Does anybody have a good mechanical analogy to help me understand the role of emotions in people?

Thank you.

I think that the purpose of emotions is for them to trigger reactions and behaviors, so I'd say that if humans were engines, emotions would be the fuel, the sparks that come out of the sparkplugs and the oil in the various parts of the engine. The fuel, the sparks and the oil are not parts of the engine but they play a large part in dictating its behavior.
