The World of Nothing from Super Paper Mario. If you listen closely to the background music, you can hear a heart monitor flatlining...

I remember when I was younger being scared of the game croc more than any other. Being unable to turn because you handled like a tank was properly stressful. Other than that, that moment in Timesplitters 3 when you see your first changeling (jo barf creepy)(but only in singleplayer) freaked me out the first time.

A little bit out of context, but I just opened up and cleaned an NES controller from my childhood last night, and well... I'm dreading opening up the second :|

I recently realized while playing Ninja Gaiden III with it that my buttons' responses seemed somewhat imperfect so figured it might be a little dirty, but... ewwwww. It really didn't look so terrible at a standard glance from the outside. I don't really know how much tighter the response is now, but I assume it's more responsive simply for the piece where the buttons seem to have more snap-back and make a more audible clicking noise when released from a depressed state than I recall >_>

Now I don't even want to have to touch the second controller(time capsule of yuk) until it's clean

There's actually some pretty nightmarish stuff in a lot of the Sonic Games, especially Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 where things got a little heavier than the Genesis trilogy:

-Sonic CD: The Japanese game over music is basically "Awww, you lost. That's okay, you can always try again." The North American music is basically "YOU ARE NOW TRAPPED IN THE ICY BLACK GRIP OF DEATH AND SOON THE REST OF THE WORLD WILL JOIN YOU!! ! YOU FAILED! FAILED HORRIBLY! WELCOME TO HELL!! !" The NA boss music is pretty creepy too.

-Sonic Adventure 2, which shows Maria's being shot to death while with Shadow on the Ark, and then Gerald Robotnik about to be executed after he went insane when he learned that she had died, and then Shadow presumably dies after he and Sonic save the world. The music certainly also helped fit the chillingness - chillingness isn't a word? It is now. :)

In Sonic Spinball for the Genesis the first boss has creepy Robotnik-heads that puke out magma (some people think it's blood), another is a robotic womb-like contraption that shows the animals being turned into robots (with a window in it so you can see the animals looking like x-rays from radiation or maybe being electrocuted). And it's called the Veg-o-Matic. Huh?? Also the game over music sounds a bit like it's saying OHMYGOOHMYGODOHMYGODNONONONONOOO! 8O

Other games I can think of are:
Game Over Return Of Ganon from The Adventure of Link. Who would have thought a laughing cartoony-looking pig could induce such nightmares?

It's more of an E-rated version or a parody of a typical horror game, but Luigi's Mansion had some pretty creepy stuff, like Bogmire the boss ghost. The Beta version was even creepier because the game over screen showed a zombie-like Luigi with baggy, pupiless eyes! Actually the game originally had a timer where you had to rescue Mario before sunrise. If you didn't the mansion would vanish with Mario still inside which makes Luigi so depressed he ends up looking like that, or the ghosts turned him into a zombie, or both. I'm actually glad they left that out because it was just too much~!

In Rainbow Six: Vegas 2, enemies will sometimes spawn only a few feet away, in areas that the player has already checked, making tactics pretty useless. It can be scary when 10 heavily armed AI rush out of a toilet stall or something:

What are some other things you find creepy in non-horror games?

Glad to not have played this game as a child overall. (Though I was already a teenager when it came out.)

I thought a lot of the music in the american version of Sonic CD was pretty creepy actually and a lot of the levels are really atmospheric. This music was pretty creepy to me when I was in the third grade:

Also lol@ the "porno" sounds in the bad future version of Tidal Tempest's US theme

This isn't really scary but it is instead disturbing.

In Rogueport in Paper Mario the Thousand Year Door there are gallows, which are for hanging people... rated E for everyone and made by Nintendo. Usually Nintendo acts like Disney and removes anything not kid friendly particularly in non-Japan releases but they forgot this one "hanging" under their "noose".

Another thing from Super Paper Mario...

No explanation needed for the #1 cause of arachnophobia among Nintendo fans.
She also poops rupees in a later fight and can use telekinesis on them. Nintendo that's one heck of an idea for a horror movie!

Every haunted house level in Gex 2 used to scare me when I was little.

This:

Also.... Monster Party. On the NES. Yeah, it's a horror game, but I'm including it in this thread anyway since it's already filled with scary things in general, since I'm betting most here havent played this one. And because the game also isnt ENTIRELY horror themed; plenty of things are just plain goofy, and most of the levels themselves arent themed as horror either; places like a forest on a sunny day, a pyramid that doesnt even have mummies in it, just scorpions and snakes, and so on.

It was on the NES, and had more freaky moments than any other game on that system that I can think of. Which is part of why i'm bringing it up. Because it's on the freaking NES of all things.

A few of the moments:

Image

Image

THAT happened very abruptly in the first level.

And then there's this boss. It's a severed head. Know how it propels itself? With the blood spraying out of the neck stump. No, seriously. That's what it does. And that's not even mentioning the thing in the background (which you encounter directly at the end of that level). It should be noted that the level this takes place in has ZERO horror elements to it; it's sort of a magical cloudscape place. The enemies there are not at all scary, unless you consider flying sticks of dynamite to be horrifying.

But the worst of all was the ending. Just... WTF. How in the hell did THAT make it past Nintendo's censors? Just.... what...the hell. There are very, very few things in gaming that I find more freaky and unsettling and just... awful.... then that ending. Just... ugh. I'll not spoil it here; mere screenshots wont do it justice, so look it up on Youtube if you want to see it.
