Do you sometimes feel bad for other ASD people who have to live off welfare and stuff from the government?
I do not judge those on welfare, but I think that there is a stigma to living off the government.
I don't want to have to live of the government forever, more than the average population.

Yeah I am living on welfare and some family help so I know it sucks so I feel bad for others in that position...and there is certainly stigma which makes it suck a lot more.

No frickin' way. I think they have it made, and I can't wait to get on disability. The stigma is a bunch of b.s. The truth is that no one in modern society is economically independent. People rely on others to provide their food, their clothing, and their homes, whether they have a job or not. People on welfare do the same thing.

Most jobs consist of trifling crap that is not even necessary for society to function, if not outright harmful. Think about auto insurance agents for example; they sit at desks shuffling paper all damned day. Why? Because society is structured so that everyone needs a vehicle to survive, and there are so many people driving, accidents are frequent. Society was once structured so that people didn't have to travel large distances, and there was no good reason to change that.

Work is slavery; the more people who can avoid it, the better.

Work is slavery: I actually like your point very much.

This will probably make a lot of people angry, but I don't want the stigma of the "poor ASD kid on welfare".

I am on disability and would not say I have it made....I get 721 a month 300 of which goes to rent,,,,and the remaining 400 goes pretty quick with my phone, taking the bus around, getting stuff like shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrush, stuff for that once a month time and especially if I want to do anything aside from sit at home and/or walk to the park here and there.

So all and all essentially barely scraping by, its like the disability people and Food stamps/EBT people collaborate to make sure you are in an uncomfortable position financially on a constant basis. As is might have to supplement what food I am able to get with stuff from the local food shelf if there is one and I qualify.

I already live on a limited income. $333 per month plus $177 food stamps.

That would potentially be helpful when I am ready to think about moving out, but...even for that there is a waiting list. Not exactly looking to move all that soon though, I have plenty of other stress to deal with before trying to jump into that. Point is sure being on disability is better than nothing, but not sure it can really be described as 'having it made' at least not in my opinion but I guess it would depend on how one defines that.

I don't like the stigma either but for now I can't help it - I can't work right now due to POTS. But I'm getting assessed for Asperger's on the 25th and I'm hoping I get diagnosed and perhaps the psychologist could recommend me for disability due to it as I cannot handle the stress of working in a coffee shop anymore - it's so much BS and gossip and poor work ethic (team atmosphere my arse) its not describable. My family doctor didn't recommend me for disability for POTS as I am not officially diagnosed with it yet - there's a wait list to see a specialist for that.

I probably wouldn't be able to live independently on disability either or else I could apply for geared-to-income housing but I've heard that is a 2 or 3 year wait

Yep.

When I qualified for it and really needed it, I still refused to even apply for welfare. I had it in my mind that signing those documents meant I was giving up or admitting defeat, and that if I went on welfare or disability it would be a permanent thing and I absolutely could not allow myself to do that.

In hindsight, I cost myself/friends/family money by not accepting gov't funds. I now know that had I done it, it would have only been temporary while I Needed it. But the stigma was so strong (from my own self judgement, not from others) that I absolutely could not do it and never did.

I've since managed to damn near cure myself and have been back to earning money for over a year now and hope to never be in a financial position where it's even a consideration ever again in my life.

I do feel a bit bad for those who have to rely on it, because obviously they're not able to function at a level that they can earn a living. I can only hope that one day they learn what I have and are able to get themselves into better health and then back into the job market.

I don't think anyone here needs to justify how they live their lives! ASD is a disability. Since being on WP and reading about what others often have to endure in their lives I have downgraded my symptoms to 'mild' - I know ASD folk often lack empathy but there are limits!

I don't feel bad for anybody who's on the spectrum, because that would be pity. None of us need pity. We all need acceptance.
