OP you'd be surprised how common that is. The brain is changing all the time. It can change a great deal in a single year. Like I said, you remind me of when I was 25 or 26 except that that wasn't the year I got smart, that was the year I grew a spine.

Really you have always been improving progressively except the apparent rate of improvement can seem to go in stops and starts. Even when you feel the same, you're getting smarter, your brain is always preparing for improvements before they happen.

Yes you can a quantum leap in cognitive ability at 17 and this probably isn't the last time that will happen to you. It could happen every few years. It's normal for that to happen to people. It's also normal to think that normal things aren't normal because people only know their own story, not everyone else's.

Well that's my unscientific hypothesis anyway :P

Thank you for the insightful information!

By the age of 140, you should have bloomed by now :)

I was a very late bloomer for a male (I'm 47 now). I was always different to the other kids. I never swore. While they were into drugs and girls, I was in the School Library looking up Astronomy. I didn't have my first female encounter until I was 24.

I missed out on a lot growing up and I know I never grew up properly. I see other men all serious and grown up and here's me who still likes to throw rocks, see how far I can flick my cigarette butts and make tiny Samurai swords out of tiny bits of spring steel. Although I am (almost) responsible paying my bills, I'm still very childish and naive on the inside for my age - always have been. I don't think I could live on my own.

I was very naive and trusting when I was younger. It bit me in the butt so many times. Every time I'd get hurt by someone, I'd swear to myself to be more wary next time but I never learned. I was like a little trusting puppy. I'm better now (and have a nicer set of people around me). Live and learn!

I was not slow, in fact, quite the opposite. I even knew my stims were not the usual thing when I was about 5 or 6 and went to great lengths to hide them. I'm quite bright in ways like that! I've got things going on on levels people don't even know exist!

I have had people tell me "She was flirting with you!" and I've never even noticed. That part's a curse.

So is the inability to socialise. I actually prefer not to socialise. I THOROUGHLY ENJOY nights like this where I'm all alone.

But yes, I was a VERY LATE bloomer and I think I've still got some more blooming despite the bloody old age I already am. Perhaps I'll never get there. Oh well. At least I like myself. That's important!

Academically I was usually well ahead of the curve, and was always at least above average.

Socially however, I was an extremely late bloomer
