So this guy was arrested for making a dumb-ass joke that wasn't funny.

People need to get the f**k over themselves.

And pretty much shows the points that 'je suis charlie' does not mean that you support the freedom of satire in general, but that you support satire only when the target of said 'ridiculing' is politically acceptable. Of course also forgetting that Charlie Hebdo was involved in an attempt to outlaw a certain political party, because they did not agree with that parties viewpoints.

Actually, I would say he crossed the line and actually probably deserved the arrest since it could have provoked violence. I was just making a point about free speech and whether we really want to live in a society where absolute free speech is always fair game...not to mention a world where trolls will cross the line just to prove a point. On message boards, thousands of people could be reading at one time. So this little pathetic troll actually has a lot of influence.

I don't believe in absolute free speech...just pointing out hypocrisy.

Well you can't have complete free speech one way and not the other.

Other than not accepting any kind of responsibility of free speech that is the other point of contention i have with the neo-liberals in this context. They want to be offensive as they like to other groups (muslims in this case) without having any of their core values challenged or ridiculed. The Islamic community never agreed to enter into this arrangement.

Why single out the neo-liberals? Are Hollande's socialists not equally culpable?

Neo liberalism is the mainstream political consensus of the day and includes most parliamentary bodies. Hollande's 'socialists' included no doubt.

Hollande has increased government spending and taxation. He is not a neo-liberal by any stretch of the imagination, unless you are using the phrase in its original context rather than the one it has been used in for 30 years.

This is exactly my point that France is no champion of free speech, racism is just accepted there.
