I have no idea how they get the fur from minks. I'd think they kill them first though. I don't really know. I really think it would be difficult to find a mink coat that surplus fur from hunting ;-) They just breed them for their fur.

Let me ask ya'll who don't have a problem with fur unless it's obtained cruelly. What about second hand fur? The money going to the folks who raised and killed them is already there and now whatever money is spent to buy it goes to either the thrift store or the person having the yard sale. Would you buy a beautiful fur coat that you saw really cheap and just not worry about how it was gotten because that was years and years ago, or would you still stick with that particular category of fur? All of my furs were bought at thrift stores, yard sales, and one was given to me in a box of hand me downs from a lady on Freecycle, so the whole idea of supporting cruelty isn't an issue for me because of that. My money went to individuals or charity thrift stores. However, there are still plenty of people who would rather see a fur thrown out and destroyed rather than someone wear it.

I once did a piece on animal rights groups and fur. I spoke to several people from different groups and one of the questions I asked was why throw paint or blood on the fur and destroy it? Why not collect the donated furs and give them to homeless women? That would take some of the glamour out of it for lots of people and it would also keep people much warmer than a cheap cloth coat. Every one of them said absolutely not. They didn't want anyone wearing fur and would rather see someone be uncomfortable in the winter or even get sick from the cold or freeze rather than "support the fur industry". Several of them were against fake fur because they said it still encouraged people to buy fur and made people think it was ok, especially the good fakes that look almost like real ones.

My favorite one to wear right now is a vintage early 1960's leopard thigh length coat with a matching hat. It's so cool, and my daughter actually found a pair of leopard cat eye sunglasses this weekend and bought them for me! I can't wait to wear that somewhere! I wish I had a car today so I could go to the grocery store or somewhere in it lol!

I wouldn't see buying something of fur second hand as supporting animal cruelty....its already over and done with by that time and so may as well not waste it. More wasteful to destroy it and in my opinion more disrespectful to the animals it came from may as well be keeping someone warm if possible...but yeah you're not giving money to the fur industry that way. And against fake fur.... :? don't really know what to say to that lol.

I don think I have ever worn anything with real fur and to be honest I try to steer clear of fake fur too as I tend to be allergic or have texture issues with most "dead" fur or feather.

I haven't got a problem with something like leather or sheepskin that's a by product of the meat industries as its kind of recycling. However I don't like the idea of growing animals for the sole purpose of getting "cool" looking fur.

My dogs have had real fur toys, provided by a hunter friend. But again he shoots bunnies to feed his hounds and the skins are usually thrown out.

I don't have a problem with used fur,I don't think it's a good idea to toss paint on someone becuse some of the fake fur looks "real".As for fur farms, they suck. They are disgusting.Just google pictures of them.I know that poultry and swine are raised commercially, also in horrid conditions. At least most of the parts from the animal gets used for food, leather, fertilizer like blood meal and bone meal.No one eats a mink from a fur farm.I don't have a problem with people using the pelt from an animal they harvested for food. There was a place that was taking hunter's deer hides and making gloves for disabled vets in wheelchairs,I thought that was a great idea.I suppose if you lived in Siberia having a fur coat might make sense.I don't see why anyone in Miami would need one.I also had a pet chinchilla, just think how many have to be slaughtered to make one coat.Just a waste of life. And it is true that some are skinned alive.

I know that lots of people are against fur now, but there are still plenty who aren't. I'm mainly wondering how extreme some people who are against it are wanting to go. I'm talking about the way some people get blood or red paint and throw it on people who wear fur. What's everybody's opinion on that?

I like fur and have several, all of which were bought at thrift stores, yard sales, or given as a hand me down. I wear them fairly often in the winter and haven't ever had any problem with that. I do wonder how it is in other parts of the country and other countries as well, about wearing fur. Are there some areas where it's rarely done and people who wear it get a lot of flack? Are there other places where it's common and nobody says anything?

For those who are against fur, are there any circumstances where you think it's ok, such as vintage or hand me down furs? Do you think they should be taken away from those who bought them and destroyed or given to the poor? Do you think it's ok to assault people who wear it by throwing things at them? Are you so against fur that you feel that even fake fur is bad because it encourages people to wear it? Do you extend your feelings to leather as well? Have you always felt that way and have you ever owned fur?

For those who are for fur, do you think that all animals are fair game for fur or only certain ones? Do you think that people who are against fur have the right to nonviolent protest of wearing fur? Do you own fur and if so have you had any trouble when wearing it? If you feel that only hand me down or vintage furs are ok, why is that? Do you like fake furs?

It's so confusing. Number one, I would never assault anyone for wearing fur because I feel so incredibly sad for the nearly bald humans. I believe we are psychologically traumatized, like, really, really bad from having lost our natural fur and this is what causes us to do weird things like wear other animal's skin and clothing which is really unnatural for any species. We are simply uncomfortable. It seems to be a fact. If you live on land, you need some kind of protection and we pretty much do not have any. We have no natural way of protecting ourselves. Barely any claws, our teeth are a joke, thin skin and no fur. So this leaves us quite vulnerable as a species and look at how we overcompensate!
So, I wouldn't blame a human for wearing fur in a futile effort to gain what was lost.

Now, as for the fur industry - I don't like it. All farming industries involving animals are pretty much yuck so my belief is, limit the species involved. I would limit it to turkeys, chickens. pigs, and fish. If it were up to me, there would be no cattle eaten as food simply because they are are too bulky and have a lot of fat. I would strive to grow the food in as small a space as possible and give a lot of the land back to wildlife. In other words, no cattle grazing.

If we were a species lesser in number and there were all these other species, many with fur, roaming around, and we all had to find our own food, I would be all for wearing the hides of the hunted animals, so long as the food was eaten. It's just the circle of life. You eat energy. I see nothing immoral and unethical for a species to not partake in the consumption of energy. It would be a sin against nature. So hunting and utilizing, I am all for since we are limited in our natural defenses.

As for buying old fur, it doesn't matter to me if people buy vintage furs. I just feel it unnecessary, the way we exist now, to operate large fur farms. Hand me down furs, sure and people need to mind their own business. It's no one's business if someone has a fur coat. I don't like it when people act stupid over it and use it as an excuse to hate others, disrespect human life. It's just misanthropy to me.

Fake fur is a good alternative to fur.

All in all, I am not against fur and fur farms, well, they are not my thing, but if someone had one, I wouldn't freak out or anything. It isn't any worse than a hog or cattle farm. Just as messy and polluting. The outcome is similar. Death is never pretty and what we do to exist is downright creepy and ugly. We must eat something that was once alive in order to exist the way we do. It is kind of wasteful to just use the fur but if you are cold, being a human, then what can you do? You must keep warm. Sadly, evolution has blessed most land creatures with pelts that keep them warm but not the poor, pathetic human. He has nothing. So, he must compensate and it aint always pretty but if you look at morality from a survival perspective, it is alright to wear another animal's pelt so that you may survive a brutal winter and let's be real, animal pelts happen to be warm. It doesn't make me heartless. Life on earth is tough. All the species want to fight to exist and will do whatever they can to accomplish that. At the same time, we need to understand as humans, for us to exist, we must have animals so we need to be sure we don't kill them all off.
What is really sad about humans is we are cursed with so little defenses yet we are so judgmental of each other, don't eat this, don't wear that, which makes it seem even more cruel.

Against real fur. Fake is okay. Would to make real ones illegal.

This is why some animals are endangered or extinct.

I know this thread is old, sorry for the necrobump.

I am definitely anti-fur. I don't believe in killing animals so people can wear their fur to look nice. For me, it's no different from killing your dog and wearing its fur. I guess if an Eskimo had to kill a polar bear for its fur to keep warm, I would be okay with that. But in general I am against killing animals for their fur.

The more endangered a species is, the higher the price its fur will command.

Not really a fur supporter, nor antifur, but believe that if you're going to wear fur, you should at least have the decency, and thriftiness to eat the animals who's fur that you want to wear, and you should kill them yourself. -- Fox or Mink cassarole, anybody?

I saw a recipe for that in "A Year in Provence" by Peter Mayle.

A relation has a bobcat fur hat, sort of like a Daniel Boone type. The bobcat was hit by a car,so I don't see anything wrong with wearing that.Instead of a racoon tail it's the bobcat tail.He says it's really warm but has to keep it where his dog can't get ahold of it. :D

I think if an animal is killed for its fur, they should make use of the meat too. You know, waste not want not.
