Now and then I write an autism post, and now and then I also write a movie review/analysis. Today, I've combined these two ideas to do an autism movie analysis.

I loved Benny & Joon when I first saw it in 1993. That was long before my Aspergers diagnosis. I went back to rewatch it a few weeks ago. I found two characters like me. Not only that, but the movie has this theme: Neurodiverse people are capable of love, creativity, and making their own choices.

On the flipside, I found another reviewer who thought Benny & Joon is ableist. Instead, I thought her review itself was ableist and patronizing, in that way where allists & NTs think they know better than we do about what we want and need. So I talk about that, too.

Enjoy!
