I notice we human beings kiss as a means of affection but why do we do it?

Probably a similar reason cats might touch noses...or lick each other.

Connection.

If it's a romantic/sexual relationship, to gauge your attraction for the individual and communicate your readiness to step it up a level.

In an affectionate/family relationship, it indicates the levels of that affection, too.

I've read about it having other meanings in other cultures--some Europeans kiss business associates? Or something like that. . . as for why it exists... my perspective on that would be different, as I believe in creation and the immortal soul (not evolution and every human behavior has an animal behavior origin/equivalent). I see humans as uniquely created in the image of God, and believe that God imparted immortal soul into the first human by breathing the pneuma (spirit, wind, breath) physically into his lungs.

So maybe that's why humans kiss. We were made in the image of God, God "kissed" the first man to life, and since then humans kiss those they love and desire a soul-connection with.

You may now proceed to bash the looney right-wing religious conservative for her freaky Biblical views.

Because we share a common ancestor with those:

That's why.

It's fun, and can lead to activities that are even more fun!

I don't mind it, I don't mind the idea of kissing other guys who have love for me, I can't get that physically close, simple hugs are painful, kissing and beyond that it's too much going on.

The science behind it is fascinating.
The lips are packed with nerve endings and a kiss sends information to the limbic system and releases oxytocin, and some other hormones I think.
Oxytocin increases feelings of calm and trust, as well as "love".
There's also a theory that kissing is an instinct that serves to transmit information about the partner's taste, smell, and sound, and thus giving more information on whether or not that partner is compatible with ourselves.

I suspect this behavior might have arisen from food sharing in our non-human ancestors.
