Check out Ultima Online - http://uo.com

It was among the first and probably still the best of 2d / sprite-based MMORPGs. It isn't officially free but I've heard there are "alternative" ways to play it that way. I haven't played it for a few years but I haven't seen anything comparable appearing in the 2d MMORPG field.

I played Tibia when I was on high school, and I was obsessed. Now I think it's crap, but a lot of people in my city continues playing it.

Tibia was my first MMORPG

Maple Story. It's an okay-ish free MMORPG. It's 2D.

Trickster Online. It's an okay-ish 2D isometric free MMORPG.

Conquer Online is in my opinon the best mmorpg there is. It is completely free and fast download and has 3d graphics but they are in 2d. Theres 5 classes to choose from alot of good stuff you should definetly check it out. www.conqueronline.com if you need help with the game whisper Mulcahey on the Virgo server.

There's an old saying among gamers that a game can be good and free, good and online, or free and online, but not good, free, and online. Ultima Online is good, but technically it's not free. There are private servers that are free, but the main servers cost money to play on. Maplestory is fun, but leveling is a lot of work, except that it's possible to buy levels. Like, with real money. Yeah, you can play for free, but only if you're willing to work your ass off to be on the same level as these fourteen year old l33t sk1llz dipshits who bugged their parents for money to buy that ultimate sword of slaying.

I know that's how the Korean companies do it...but I don't understand the fun of BUYING your character in an RPG. The whole POINT of the game is to level them up and (possibly) customize them how you want.
