Will your AS/HFA child go on escalators? My son won't; he's 10. I remember being afraid of them when I was a child.

My son was afraid of them, but not overly so. I don't even think that he thinks twice about it now. I was terrified of them, especially when getting "on" or "off".

Does your son have perception problems?

If you have a trick to get my son to "blow his nose though" I'd love to hear it! He won't! Can I trade problems?

When I was younger, I thought escalators were one of the most awesome things on the planet. I liked elevators, just not as much as escalators.

Until I was about 8 or 9, I couldnt get on escalators. There was one in the Taj Mahal in Atlantic City that is 4 stories tall, and I literally had a meltdown trying to avoid getting on it.

My aspie son isn't afraid of them, but my NVLD daughter is terrified of them. I don't like them much either.

I like escalators now. For the most part. But when I was a kid, they freaked me out because I thought I might easily be caught between two steps, or between the last step and the end, and get squeezed to mush.

I was terrified of them as a kid and would refuse to ride them. I tolerate them now. So do you think the fear could be due to a lack of perception? I know my fear was at least partially due to a fear of heights so maybe not in my case.

As a young child, I never minded them at all until the part where you get to the very top or bottom. Everytime I'd get off, I always felt like I was going to trip or fall over. But I never tried to avoid them or anything.

I used to love escalators as a kid. It was pretty much the only reason why I put up with taking the subway or the el train. Since the word "escalator" was too hard for me to pronounce, I used to call them "moving stairs". Something about stairs being able to move fascinated me.

I think it depends on his/her vestibular system. From what I understand, some kids with sensory issues are hyper-sensitive to gravity, while others are hypo-sensitive.

I'm not sure which my son was/is, but pre-OT he HATED escalators. Now (after lots and lots and lots of swinging in and out of OT), he is completely fine with them.

My son loves them ... He runs up the down escalator, and down the up escalator.

It's a bit of a problem actually if he's in a silly mood. You can't stop him. I have to position myself to catch him then WAAAAAAAAA

...

looks from people that say "What a bad parent you are. Can't you control your son."

I convey a look back that says, "At least he's having fun you uptight so and so!"

I don't let it worry me. If there's not many people around I join in. It's fun!! !

I remember being "terrified" of elevators too. I would run in, smack myself against the back wall, and hold on for dear life to the saftey bar most of them seeemd to have!
