When I try to be calm and relaxed and remove my anxiety, my AS traits seem to reduce. Does anyone else experience this? I wonder if hypnosis would help someone with AS.

I think it depends what traits you mean. I meditate, and this of course makes me feel calm. But I always tend to isolate myself, and never want to have much to do with situations with a lot of sensory stimuli.
I do stim less, though.

Hm.....my AS traits definately get worse in stressful situations, and they definately get better when I am calm and relaxed, such as in a familiar enviornoment or when I've had a few drinks. I have also heard people say that anti anxiety medication helps with AS.

My 'traits' diminish when I have a sense of confidence, but they don't come close to going away altogether.

Sorry to the mod's in this forum but might think I am bursting bubbles...

Want to know why u feel better...

Introverts, on the other hand, are highly sensitive to dopamine. Too much dopamine & they feel over stimulated. Introverts use an entirely different neurotransmitter, acetylcholine, on their more dominant pathway. Acetylcholine is another important neurotransmitter connected to many vital functions in the brain & body. It affects attention & learning (especially perceptual learning), influences the ability to sustain a calm, alert feeling & to utilize long-term memory, & activates voluntary movement. It stimulates a good feeling when thinking & feeling. Much of the present research into acetylcholine strengthens our understanding of the introverts brain & body.
Acetylcholine was the first neurotransmitter identified, but, as other neurotransmitters were detected, research focused on the newer ones. Recently, however, a connection was made between a deficiency of acetylcholine & Alzheimer’s disease.

So introverts require a limited range of not too much or too little dopamine, & a good level of acetylcholine, to leave them feeling calm & without depression or anxiety.

I been on 4 different ssri anti anxiety meds and they blow, you will probably get stuck on TCas

I find when I am feeling relaxed my social interaction is a lot worse. When talking to people i am constantly on guard so I dont say something wrong. But when I relax and get comfortable the faux pas start flowing pretty thickly and I start telling my long stories and I just generally act like myself. I dont allow myself to relax around people., though around AS people I can be me a lot more.

hypnosis would be worthless with me, usually that works more when the disorder is not severe and does not severely affect sensory system...

in my case if i am receiving one of my good sensory stims i tend to be a lot less PDD-NOS'ish

When in doubt, ask an autistic. Chances are, they're obsessed with what you need to know.

I'm much the same. There's a fine line between relaxing and letting concentration slip, which is what usually happens to me when I make a
conscious effort to 'Relax ! !! !' .Sometimes a certain amount of stress helps to
hold me together in social situations, which in turn makes me feel a little more
comfortable if not entirely relaxed.

That's what I think too. I just wish I could feel confident a lot more often. People probably still think I'm rather strange but it doesn't bother me so much when I feel confident.

When I try to relax, my AS traits are still there. However, I am less critical of myself and notice my AS traits less.

When I am less relaxed, I seem to be more quiet, but still very much AS like. It's similar when I am relaxed, I am more outgoing, but apparently still a bit "off" according to others.

I specifically notice one thing, speech characteristics. When I'm socially tense, which can be in a one-on-one social situation, such as being uncomfortable with the new doctor (just experienced this on my birthday couple days ago) or especially within the group dynamic, that I "motormouth".

I talk fast, higher than normal volume & pitch, in a monologue; people have to yell at me sometimes to get me to shut up. I started noticing a couple months back during a big overseas reunion party, one lady friend commented on this and the problems it causes, and it happened again in a group situation 3 weeks later in London.

This was before I found out I was Asperger's.

I notice I don't do this as much or as intensely all the time, just when ill at ease. The folks in the reunion I've known for roughly 30 years, makes no diff to this happening when I try to join in the conversation, I still get nervous and motormouth.
When it's someone I know well and we're not part of a crowd, I don't seem to do this so quickly.
