I'm very skeptical of people who claim to have Asperger's but have not gotten an actual and correct diagnosis. It seems to be the thing on that outrageous "emo" fad.

I'm pretty damned skeptical of those with the "pedigree", since it is a fad thing.
There are a lot of different reasons why some of us don't, a lot of them.
Emo, wtf is that? Some fad? Speak English. I can send you to a shrink that will, guaranteed, diagnose you as not having it, want his address?
I should have had my leather leash from my childhood bronzed, I think they did my baby shoes instead.
Can you tell this kind of attitude tends to piss me off?

It isn't a simple question ED, as long as we have these I'm holier then you are because I have a paper for proof of being an Aspie.

self dx

I firmly believe my capability to dx is as good as the majority of professionals issuing or denying dx

no need for holy water or writs

even if I said I was official - this is the web, do you take my testamony as proof? why?

'splains me, I deal with life better

BTWM since finding my personal ASD I have joined the local chapter of ASA. Professionals there don't doubt me.

I could be lying about that. How would you know?

but I'm not.

It's not my fault if a lot of people basically act that way which is what my comment was aimed at (and not specifically you since I don't know you).

I'm finding this very NT stereotypical anyway - trying to concot an elite out of nothing. . .
I've seen it in other forums full of social outcasts such as social anxiety forums; they make threads whining that "there are intruders in the forum" and basically try to witch hunt out anyone who doesn't conform to a stereotype or who's got better luck at coping - so if you managed to graduate from uni or have a few friends or maybe a girlfriend then there'll always be a clique drawing the line from their own limitations there to tell you you are not as "autentic" as they are.

. . .and as I said, this is even more ridiculous in the case of AS because it does seem to be cut by Occam's Razor in favour of just "HFA" or "PDD-NOS". . .
. . . so that's what my sarcasm is aimed at - I wouldn't be surprised if they did a Southpark episode out of this; it's really the kind of thing. . .

oh, yes, I understand. They were saying that Barack Obama was not 'black enough' to be considered black, according to some stereotyping they were doing!

I was diagnosed with AS last year, after 13 years of wondering if I was on the spectrum.

Outside of WP, I have never heard of AS being trendy. As far as I know, no one I know irl even knows what it is, with the exception of the doctor who diagnosed me.

Well, speaking only for myself, my reasons for having an official Diagnoses, were to protect my rights as far as housing and employment go. I have lost housing and jobs, due to outright discrimination against my AS. I want to ensure that I can fight back, if need be. My daughter, who is also AS, has been evicted three times last year alone, because of it. She can't prove she has AS, and thus fight for her rights. She is working on getting an official dx, not in order to join the ranks of the elite, but to be able to advocate for herself more effectively. IMO, that is the only reason I persevered to get mine.

thanks for your story, Hartz. It is the realization that we have to be responsible enough to give them what proof they need to treat us like decent human beings.

Well that's me; no claim to be Asperger's nor any desire to be such.

I am, nevertheless, autistic.

Anybody care to challenge my claim? Here? By e-mail at [email protected] ?

Didn't think so!

When in doubt, ask an autistic. Chances are, they're obsessed with what you need to know.

Ed,
great topic-hope it makes more people aware of the entire community here.

Am have classic autism [lf/mf],and other bits and pieces added on [some am don't agree with],was previously diagnosed with another ASD.
Am un/informally diagnosed by a speech therapist who is an expert in autism, but he was unable to give the label formally because he is part of the SS' learning disability team and doesn't have the authority to do anything but assess,am couldn't afford private and NHS specialists here are non existant,is something am working on because am on a completely different level in terms of problems and support needs.

The hate against self diagnosers here is nasty.

Asperger's disorder (this one is also official); Gillberg's criteria

I was self-diagnosed:

Diagnosed, yes, but I never believed.

Not everyone diagnosed actually has it, you know!
