I am very sorry to bother anyone, however I was blessed by a happy psychological assessment yesterday and the happy lady stated that she believes that I possess High Functioning Autism. May I ask, in my profile, shall I state this as Asperger's Syndrome, Autism or 'Other Autistic Spectrum Disorder'?

HFA is very similar to Aspergers, the main difference is a delay in language.

Depends on what the lady means by 'HF autism'.

If she actually meant HFA (language delay and/or cognitive delay in childhood which those with AS don't have) and if you want to be correct by current definitions of the world's two most important manuals/catalogues of psychiatric disorders, you should pick 'other autism spectrum disorder'.

If she thinks HFA and AS are the same and if you agree with her, you might want to pick one of the options that state you have Asperger's.

HFA is Kanner's autism, yeah. But Kanner's and Asperger's are so closely related as to make very little difference. Kanner's includes more speech delays and Asperger's excludes people with mental retardation but other than that there's a vast amount of overlap.

And if they're ever plan to be on it, they should also not forget to add the PDD-NOS option. I'd happily pick that one!

Yes, you shouldn't have to pick "other ASD" unless you have CDD or Rett's, which are uncommon enough that we'd probably have only a dozen people with those anyway.

An NLD option would be nice, too- or an "Autism Spectrum Cousin", which could include NLD, ADHD, and maybe even OCD or Tourette's.

"HFA" is the same thing as "LFA", except the IQ is over 70. Symptom severity tends to be worst in "LFA", which they attribute to the lower IQ, but current thinking is that it's the severity of the symptoms that make someone have a low IQ in autism, rather than the traditional form of mental retardation (Cohen).

Over-focusing and over-sensitivity to the world are greater in LFA, so to speak.

I’ve always thought that HFA had more things in common with Aspergers than LFA, maybe because Tony Attwood is oriented to consider AS and HFA the same disease. Then the principal difference seems to be language delay, since IQ and language are normal in both diseases. That made me think that Aspergers is a subgroup of HFA, a sort of HFA without language delay.
