Here's some music I made that tries to capture the sound and spirit of old NES music.

Very cool Pugly!

Some bit remind me of Take On Me by Aha. Very happy sounding, I like it!

What did you use to create it? Have you heard of Famitracker?

I made it in Logic Express with its built in analog synth modeler ES1. I paid special consideration of the type of waveforms the NES produced and kept myself within that range of sounds.

For some drum sounds the NES used a primitive sampler, so I applied some lofi effects to get the bass drum sound.

I've heard of famitracker. I was looking into that or Nerd Tracker II. I was ready to get into tracking, but I find the tracking environment too restrictive to come up with musical ideas. I need a more graphical representation... so I decided to make an approximation in an environment I am comfortable in and understand.

I should look into or attempt to make a plugin to get those true to life NES sounds. I know my noise/snare drum sound is a tad off.

Cool. Another Logic user here. Thats awesome what you did with the ES1.

Tracking certainly is a big change but its something you get used to. I think the strengths are the absolutely mad effects you can apply to each note. You could do the same with Logic but its quicker with a tracker since you can do everything with a keyboard.

As for a plugin for true NES sounds, if you are looking for 8bitness, look no further than the Magical 8bit plug - http://www.ymck.net/english/download/index.html
These people are also a great chiptune band too, very jazzy. But they are mostly inspired by the NES (or should I say Famicom) so I'm guessing the plugin should be close. Haven't tried it myself as I make chiptune on a Gameboy.

Awesome! I've been really happy with logic. I need to same up some money and get into Logic Studio 8...

That plugin was just what I was looking for...

What's the sound capabilities of the gameboy like? Any characteristic sound? To me the 'gameboy' sound was like stripped down NES... but I don't think I was paying enough attention.

No you're right, but that IS the characteristic. Extremely low bitrate sound. While sounds for a NES or even a SID chip sounds smoother, a GB has its own charms. Plus its only limited to 4 channels (might be the same for NES actually) so you have to be pretty clever to get some full sounding songs out of it. That and you can compose on the move, can't get more fun than that!

This sounds pretty good... more my style than most electronic music. I'm just not too keen on music that's inspired by dance clubs...

And YMCK sound cool too...

I wasn't able to get their plug in to work though... :?

Hmm I have heard about problems with that before actually. Might give it a go myself sometime.

So you liking YMCK then? 8) I think jazz leads sound really good coming from chip sounds, really has its charms. Oh and apparently the band make all their music using the Magical 8bit plugin!

And mayhaps new people want to listen...
