Maybe in some cases a difficult birth does lead to early developmental problems that manifests it's self as symptoms found on the spectrum. I do not know the exact details of my own birth but I have been told it was problematic and i was delivered much later than the expected date. My sister, who is an aspie like myself was delivered with no problems what so ever. I believe that there are multiple causes of ASD's, some of these may be because of things that happen after the birth but i believe that in most cases the developmental oddities begin at the embryonic stage.

From what I've learned at uni, it seems to me like nearly all the AS symptoms are related to functions of the frontal lobe of the brain.

At any rate, I certainly was a difficult baby to have; I was a test tube baby, to begin with (conceived in a test tube), mum had me when she was 39, and It was a difficult and painful birthing process ending in a C section.

My mother almost had a miscarriage with me, I think that might have contributed.

I heard 1 in 3 cases of AS involved a difficult birth. I suffered a really bad one, and it could account for some things. Any knowledge on that?

from all the info i have researched....their seems to be some correlation to difficult pregnancies and autism...................but it is not a HUGE difference, but higher probability

my wife had preaclampsia (toximia), it was not severe and we had a csection right away.......but i am autistic, so who knows...........

I too was the victim of a difficult birth. My mother's birth canal was too small and my head got stuck. The doctor performed a C-section and they practically had to unscrew my head to get me out. My parents told me I had a rim around my head, above my eyes for weeks after I was born.

I have Asperger's Syndrome, and I was delivered by C-section because of oxygen deprivation when I got tangled up in my cord and was lying on it. I was put in an incubator afterwards. I definitely believe oxygen deprivation can contribute to autism. But I also believe it is genetic. The genetics for autism are in my family.

I heard it like this once:

Autism is genetic. Sometimes, the autism genes are turned "on." Other times they are turned "off" giving only slight autistic symptoms in the person. One factor that can turn them "on" is oxygen deprivation at birth. And I have seen that statistic too about 50% of AS people had oxygen deprivation at birth.

I had Hemolytic disease while I was in the womb and had to be given a blood transfusion. All my other siblings had this problem, but because I was my mum's fifth pregnancy it was much more serious. The doctors told my mum that I would have died and she should have to have an abortion. I'm her miracle baby.

The same thing happened to me although I'm not sure how long I was in fetal distress for. Apparently I was also facing bum first with my legs wrapped around my head. Also, I was premature but I can't remember by how many weeks though. I do know that I spent about 3-4 weeks in the hospital as I was so small, I wasn't getting enough nutrients in the womb because the placenta was dieing.
My mother wasn't meant to be able to have kids anyway & was told that if she did become pregnant it would be likely that there would be problems.

That doesn't surprise me. I've seen many different cases, not just AS, where the person is a little "off" or immature to the point of retardation, and I find out oxygen deprivation was involved.

born with the cord wrapped around my neck, resulting in a c-section. my mother was 36. i didn't see her for 3 days because she was supposedly very sick, they just put me in the nursery or something. this was in 1968. she refuses to acknowledge this contributing to anything 'wrong' with me. in fact she refuses to admit i have anything at all, even though i've had anger problems and psychotic episodes all my life and this has manifested in meltdowns as desperate cries for help, and yet she has never done anything to help me.

sometimes i feel like suing that hospital.

I was born almost a month late and pulled out with foreceps. I was a very small baby for having been born so late.
