What I suggest is this (if you want to keep the slideshow format):

I don't think I'm sure of what you mean by rip to web friendly?

Do you mean, you'd like to get the photos out of the video and put them on a webpage? Or would you like to actually convert the video ...

I use the openchrome driver w/ my VIA C7-D system and it seems to be pretty good, supports compositing which is about all I care for. In terms of a media box I'd just grab your distribution of choice ...
