Now I cannot post a link to the whole article because you have to be subscriber to get it off the internet, but...
If anyone does read the New Scientist, did you read the article about autism and the internet in the 27th of June issue? _________________ Diagnosed with AS and paranoid schizophrenia. |

Indeed it's very interesting. Recently knowing about AS, now I see that chat and other non-direct interactions really help to communicate.
Take this forum for example, you can freely talk to anyone, even NT people, and you don't notice any of the quirks, voice intonations or other things that people have (specially eye-avoiding).
So:

it's very interesting article. made me realize the importance of internet for me. this is what i find most interesting:
"People with autism are using the Web in a totally different way," he says. "They have a social drive, but the exchange does not go through non-verbal stuff or emotional sharing, what they are interested in is sharing information." |

In the 19th century the six-shooter was the "Great Equalizer", now it's the internet.
It has become more of an indispensable tool than the car, at least for me it has.
I bookmarked the site in case I have to travel to Philly for any reason and I need a
support group.
New Scientist, Nature, and Scientific American I find are the more responsible mags
that are out there. |

Hello! I wanted to say hi, because I'm the "Torley Wong" mentioned in this New Scientist article. I'm also a member of Wrong Planet, and while this is my first post in almost 3 years, I've casually browsed, or perhaps more accurately, lurked in the interim. I smiled upon seeing this thread, and wanted to thank you for bringing it up.
I had a good time being interviewed by Celeste, and while that reprinting of the article leaves out pictures of Second Life — the visual component is essential to understanding the experience — you can feel free to view my personal blog @ http://torley.com , where I keep an ongoing chronicle of my adventures. Which is intriguing in some ways, because I used to mention Asperger's all the time (ever since first becoming aware of such a thing in the early 2000s), but haven't so much recently. I am always inspired to hear stories of Aspies who've surpassed and rose above the many challenges life can throw at us... I know this all too well from my own journey.
And oh my, how Wrong Planet has grown... so many new faces. Amazing. I gotta say thanks to Alex for starting this off, and helping us discuss our thoughts + feelings. There is collective success here, and that is in part because while "Fear is the mind-killer" as Dune says, we don't feel so afraid being together. And to find ways to connect with each other which work for us, is phenomenal.
I've a lot to be thankful for; I'd like to also clearly state that if I can help answer some questions about my Second Life and how it's helped me communicate better and (I don't understate this) substantially improved my "first life", please feel free to ask here... or any other eclectic Q's that come to mind, they are most graciously welcome.
Again, friendly greetings, and thanks for reading the article! T'care. |
