Re: Dear Aspie: How Do I Keep Small Talk Going? (Score: 1)

Sorry for digging up this old thread... I don't really understand how this "game" works. For instance, let's say X is talking to me: X: Hi, how are you doing? Me: I'm fine. So this is the end of the first part. Secondly, I'm supposed to ask how X is doing, so: Me: And how are you? X: I'm good too, thanks for asking. Still polite. And both parties give and receive. But, what about: X: I've been having this headache all day. Me: Sorry to hear that. End of part one. And here's where I'm stuck... Do people expect me to ask about their headache, tell them about my headaches (which are rare), or find another subject to take their mind off their headache? The same for all conversations really... Some people tell me about a problem, but i'm unsure how to answer. Most of the times I try to give advice. But, sometimes I also ask questions. For some reason women like to tell me they're constipated *sigh*. So I ask them about their nutrition. On rare occasions people told me they told me about their problem, so I could lighten them up, make them feel better by taking their mind of off it. All these mixed signals are very confusing :-/.
