I applaud Auroch's comments. Too often labeling is a prettified form of prejudice, and in the case of AS, it becomes a moniker for an overwhelming part of a person's identity. The article seemed to share a similar sentiment about looking beyond boundaries as such, but I think that Auroch more clearly pointed out that a lot of these imposed limitations can be avoided altogether by ignoring the classification in the first place. I don't know where I would fall on the spectrum of autism - many of the symptoms and circumstances typical of AS are eerily familiar to my 28 years of experience - but I'm not about to go get checked by some doctor and have it in my medical record. --- Oh, I also really enjoyed the point in the 12 about taking each child's development as his own, with its own leaps and steady parts.
