I have to agree with this. I have been regarded as low-functioning by some professionals. So have some of my closest friends. To have that category or any other segment of humanity reduced to 'useless' makes me ill.

I liked what Donna had to say a lot. I also like to think that everyone has something to society and the evolution of the species. But sometimes those traits get thwarted by social pressure and so their potential is not seen as valuable. Someone made a good point that if you have a kid who's good at English but poor in math, then, yes, you emphaszie math skills more but you don't de-emphasize the English--you encourage him to do more of that as well. I enjoyed the interview very much--I have tremendous respect and admiration for Dr. Grandin, even thought I have some philosophical differences with her regarding her chosen work. She is an inspiration to us all!

Hi Donna, Nice to meet you. I have read/own your book "Nobody Nowhere". Thanks for sharing your story with the universe. Its incredibly insightful. I have been in the field of autism for over 17 years. And..I'm sure a lot longer than that. (in the eternal sense). I agree with what you say about "low functioning" people contribute to society as they educate us in tolerance and appreciation of equality, they are our silent teachers. We are not just minds, we are also souls. Very true! I am looking for poems written by autistic people. Can you help me? I'd like to spead autism awareness through the gifts that autistic people are given. Please write me at gahana108@aol.com Love and Light, Gahana
