Looking at the article, it seems to me that the main things necessary are that the dog is fully socialized and trained well enough to get past a Canine Good Citizen test (usually this is achieved after Level II obedience classes), calm enough to be accustomed to any Aspie outbursts like sudden flapping if your son does that, and intelligent and athletic enough to start learning a canine sport with your son. It might actually be possible to train your own--certainly service dogs for agoraphobes can be, and I don't see much more specialized training involved with this before pairing--if you can find a good dog to start with. I don't know where you could get the dog certified, though.
