Re: Dear Aspie: Should Aspies Take Martial Arts? (Score: 1) by Sappho Tuesday, July 25 @ 07:26:23 EDT (User Info | Send a Message) http://www.HealingGrove.com | | Aikido is a good choice if you're worried about hurting someone. It can literally only be used for self-defence. You can't attack someone with it. My son's sensei [teacher] has experience with AS people and is wonderful with him. He is more confident and less anxious now, because he is taught to calm his mind. I can't say enough good things about aikido. It has changed our lives and I wish I had taken it when I was young and flexible. |

I am an undiagnosed aspie and I have taken karate since High School.Though we can get obsessive, we can still learn control and a good instructor will constantly stress that martial arts is used in self-defense only. I also found taking martial arts is a good lesson for an aspie learning control of themselves. If anything, karate and my sensei helped myself gain self-confidence and to this day I have no desire to hurt anyone unless I have to defend myself. |

I felt it important to show you that martial arts can be an excellent too for aspies and that many or of can overcome or minimize our disabilities. I am a very successful example of this and embrace who I am as a confident and social person. =) Karate helped indeed and helped me make peace with myself. |
