Personally, I don't believe any person has a talent. Doesn't mean the talent is always appreciated in society or marketable, sometimes the talent is downright apaling and harmful or really annoying. I had many wonderful talents which were not always appreciated - posting my younger brother upside down down the stairs repeatedly (how many people do you know can post someone), the ability to fall through space onto people with no care of self injury (I loved doing that, it'd make me laugh and laugh, even when they moved and I fell flat), headbutting skill (I was very good at this one for many years, it was my 'greeting'), hand shaking skills (nobody could flap a hand as fast as me... till I met other auties ;-), capacity to recite TV shows or shadow speak the voices of others within 0.25 of a second per phoneme (spooks people which is also rather funky), capacity to memorise endless lists and systems (ah, yes, bores people almost to suicide but its still a talent and when I get with a similar autie we are blissed out doing this though everyone else will glaze over). Point is I've rarely seen an autie without talent. Question is How do we help people WANT to morph their talents into those which will lead to greater inclusion, self sufficiency etc. And How can the greater diversity of talents be promoted instead of fixations with IQs the size of Texas. :-) Donna Williams the arty autie.
