Being Diagnosed (Adult Asperger's) - First Appointment posted at 03:57 pm on 10-20-2009
Hi and Hello! I'm very new to these forums, but I thought I'd post about my first appointment (yesterday) with a psychologist for an assessment for Asperger's Syndrome.
I was extremely nervous about being in a new place and I wasn't sure about the procedures. I miscalculated the amount of time it would take to travel and arrived 30 minutes early. So I drove around the block and waited in the parking lot until 5 minutes to time. The sign said to wait in the waiting room so that's what I did. But I chose the least visible seat in the corner and when she checked the waiting room didn't see me, so it was awkward at first.
We talked for about an hour and she asked me many questions and let me talk. A day before I filled out a three page questionnaire and she used that as a reference at first. She was very friendly and concise (directions to the office were impeccable). I was lucky to find a psychologist familiar with Asperger's adults in my area.
We discussed personal details about myself and my family. I had to sign a few documents having to do with terms of service and confidentiality (for instance if I don't show up for an appointment I'm still obligated to pay for it).
I lost my train of thought a few times while I was talking. I tend to ramble so far off topic that I forget the original question sometimes.
She asked me about my goals for the sessions. And she explained to me how a diagnosis could benefit me in certain circumstances.
There really wasn't time to deal with a whole lifetime worth of social awkwardness in an hour, but the first session was more of her getting to know the basics about me and general history.
We went 15 minutes over without even realizing it and I wished we had a little more time. The first appointment cost $140 and future sessions $110 (Testing costs more).
At the end she said that it was very likely that I have Asperger's syndrome (I'm an aspie!), but that there was still a lot more to do for an official diagnosis.
Well I hope this helps anyone thinking about seeking a diagnosis to feel a little less nervous than I did at my first appointment.
(Can you believe impeccable has 2 c's in it? It just seems overdone, I mean... why not 3 c's?)
Bye!
