Tough Decisions posted at 08:05 am on 06-26-2009
As many of you know, I will get my BS in Geography/Urban Planning in 5.7 months. However, I am faced with a tough decision. Should I go ahead into the working world and pay off the $5,500 in student loans, or should I press on and pursue graduate studies?
I found an excellent graduate program in "sustainability", which is related to urban planning. It's at Slippery Rock University, which is in western Pennsylvania, about halfway between Pittsburgh and Youngstown, Ohio. If I go full-time, I can have my Master's degree in one year. It would cost about $17,000 to do it.
So I am in a bit of a pickle, although a bachelor's degree is sufficient for my field of work, plus I have nearly 5 years of experience already.

Here is what I did on vacation:
Saturday, July 26: Left my parents' house in Houston at 10:00am, met my aunt and uncle, then we all left Houston. We stopped for lunch in Sealy (50 miles W of Houston). Then we left for Fredericksburg. We stopped for gas in La Grange (known for the long-demolished Chicken Ranch). Then we drove through Bastrop, Austin, Dripping Springs, etc. We arrived in Fredericksburg around 5:00pm. We ate at Subway, then saw a show at Rockbox Theater.
Sunday, July 27: Went to the Pacific War Museum (Fredericksburg is the birthplace of Chester Nimitz) Had lunch at a place called Wheeler's, then my mom and aunt went shopping. The guys were left really bored. Had dinner at Friedhelm's, a German restaurant. It was delicious.
Monday, July 28: Had lunch at Subway. Went to Enchanted Rock, and I almost reached the top of it. Then we had dinner at Mamacita's, a Mexican restaurant.
Tuesday, July 29: Checked out of my hotel. Ate lunch at a place called Porky's, a burger joint known for a pork burger called the Flaming Pig. Then we headed home.

After having great difficulties in my math and science classes, I have decided that geology wasn't for me, and decided to change my major to geography with an emphasis in urban planning. I worked as a GIS technician for over 4 years, and became homesick for that field of work.
Since the college I was attending--Midwestern State University, in Wichita Falls, Texas, didn't offer that degree, I will be transferring to Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas (just south of Austin).
Also, I bought a new computer--an Apple iMac. I love it so much, and will never go back to Windows again.

Today was my second day in my dorm room. I had breakfast with my parents before they had to come back home to Houston. After I got back to my dorm room, I went to lunch. Then I went jogging (in the dry, 100-degree North Texas heat) at the track at my university. Then I went to an early dinner, and my waitress flirted with me. Then I went back to my dorm room.

Just 30 More Days!!!!!
30 days from today, I will be in Wichita Falls attending Midwestern State University, majoring in geology. I am very excited about this, and looking forward to a very fun and ultra-rewarding experience (geologists are starting out at $75,000 a year with only a bachelor's degree).
And I am also looking forward to being out on my own for the first time, and I am about 95% prepared for it!

I am bored, but otherwise doing well. Today, I ran errands with my parents. We bought Father's Day gifts for my Dad, and my two uncles. It was pouring down rain, and there was a lot of thunder and lightning, so I wasn't online for the bulk of today.
Then, I ate at a Mexican restaurant near me called Gringo's. There were about 25 of us, apparently, there are a lot of fathers in my family.
I no longer want a Subaru Tribeca. I now want a Buick Rainier, because for the same price as a Tribeca, I can get a more powerful engine and many standard features that were only optional on the Tribeca.
And the very name, Rainier...is this a sign of things to come? Will my journey to the Promised Land--by which I mean Seattle--materialize? I hope so.

Wichita Falls posted at 10:24 am on 05-15-2007
On Sunday and Monday, May 13-14, 2007, I was in Wichita Falls, Texas touring Midwestern State University.
My parents and I left Houston around 9:00am on Sunday, and just went up I-45 until we reached Ennis, Texas (about 35 miles south of Dallas). We ate lunch at McDonald's when we reached Ennis.
After lunch, we headed north on U.S. Highway 287, where we would keep going until Wichita Falls. I was amazed with all the amenities that were there in towns like Corsicana, Ennis, Waxahachie, etc. Even Decatur, Texas (which has 5000 people--and is the first small town you reach after Fort Worth when going down U.S. 287) had a Chili's.
After about 2 more hours, we arrived at our hotel in Wichita Falls. Then we ate dinner at a place called Fat McBride's. It was a steakhouse.
After dinner, we went back to our hotel, and I watched the Simpsons, Family Guy, and American Dad. Then I went back to bed.
On Monday morning, I took the tour of Midwestern State University. It was an awesome campus. There is an activity for everyone, and the student-faculty ratio is 19:1, which I like. I also talked to someone from the geology department, and got some information on the geology program.
After the tour, we headed home. Around 1:00pm, we stopped for lunch in Bowie, Texas (about halfway between Wichita Falls and Fort Worth). Then we would not make another stop until getting gas in Corsicana. Then no more stops until we got home.

Another day here in the Bayou City. I am tired, but also bored. My second DVD recorder tripped out on me, so I have to get yet another one. Best Buy is sure making a lot of money off of me lol.

I am just sitting here, waiting for the Simpsons to come on. I have been very busy today. I went to church, and had lunch with people from my church. I am Lutheran. We went to Pepper's in Pasadena for lunch. I ordered the chicken fried chicken. I recorded the following movies to DVD: Career Opportunities, Wayne's World 2, Ella Enchanted, and I will record Havoc tonight. Also, I will be recording the Simpsons season finale at 7:00 tonight. I did my workout (20 minutes on the exercise bike, 25 reps with dumbbells, and 25 sit-ups). I weigh about 205 lbs, and I am trying to get down to 160 lbs.
That's about all I have to say for now.
