INTRO, and elementary school memories

This is my "aspie" journal you are reading. For my regular journal, go to my Live Journal account. --> http://jesusrock7.livejournal.com

WARNING: Blog and journal entries are often full of details others (such as NTs) might find unimportant or uninteresting. However, it's my blog -- so deal with it. *LOL*

I was born 26 May 1977 at 2:09am, Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames, Iowa. I am 29 years, 4 months, and 26 days old today--21 September 2006. I have both my biological parents, two younger brothers, one sister, two sisters-in-law, and one niece who just turned 18 months.

Growing up was hard for me. I liked school, but I hated not having many friends -- ever! I don't care that I was never one of the "cool" kids, but I just liked having friends.

I started kindergarten at a public elementary school in Wisconsin. When it was my turn to be Star of the Week, Mom brought treats for my class and also brought my baby brother John along b/c she couldn't find a babysitter. One snowy day I had to sit in the office b/c I couldn't find my snow-pants at recess. It turned out that one of the boys in my class -- Casey -- had thought they were his. The only elementary teacher I disliked was in 1st grade: Mrs. Vicky Russell. I don't know why...we just didn't get along very well, though judging from my 1st grade report card (now in my keepsake box) she could tell I was a smart kid. I was also in the Girl Scout Brownies troop at school, and that was a lot of fun. I vaguely remember the "Challenger" spaceshuttle explosion; I must've been in second grade. I saved my allowance and sent away for an info packet that included a NASA patch or sticker and a glossy photo of the shuttle launching. I remember disliking my 2nd grade reading teacher, but only a bit, because she made me stay in one day and do "sentences" like you see Bart Simpson doing on the chalkboard.

That summer I went to the Girl Scout overnight camp (Camp Ehawee) with my church friend Kathy, who went to a different school. I'd already gone to summer camps before, but this was my first overnight camp. All the counselors and even the camp director had picked "nature" names -- the CD was Thistle, my counselors were Rocky, Shades, and Rainbow (a girl), and the canoeing instructor was Squirrel. One morning we went canoeing and had breakfast on the water after tying our canoes together. Awesome!

My third grade teacher is STILL at the school, teaching 3rd grade! (I know this because I found the school website recently.) She'd read the "Little House" books to us after lunch recess. One boy in my class had them, so he'd read along with her. I still remember our class Christmas party with red and green finger-jello and candy "airplanes" made from a roll of hard candy for the body, 2 Lifesaver wheels, and a stick of gum for the wings. The school gym was fun because they'd also use it for bake sales and Halloween carnivals.

Fourth grade was a school year of transitions. First, the 3 local elementary schools were filling up, so they made room at the communal middle school for 2 fourth-grade classrooms. I was selected to be in one of those 2 classes. I felt small in the middle school at first, but I already knew some of my classmates as well as older friends Jenny and her sister Lisa from church. By this time Alan was in first grade. Jenny and Lisa's mom held a weekly after-school Bible club for kids that Alan and I went to. They lived just down the street from the elementary school, and I would find Jenny or Lisa after school and walk with them from the middle school. Then Dad would pick us up on his way home from work. Also in fourth grade I met the first Asian I'd ever seen. His name was Hong Koo, and he was Korean-American. I had the other teacher for reading class, and we began the well-known book The Indian in the Cupboard by Lynne Reid Banks.

THEN IT HAPPENED.... Dad's boss said they wanted him to work at their branch office in Hong Kong!

* To be continued. *
