Exgay Movement and Asperger's Syndrome
posted at 04:41 am on 04-20-2009

I wondered for years why there were so few succesful "exgays." For those who don't know the exgay movement is made up of conservative people of faith that wish to change their sexual orientation from homosexual to heterosexual.

I was a succesful exgay; I didn't have sex, didn't have a relationship, and was willing to "bear the cross" of loneliness and misery for the ultimate prize of knowing Christ.

Within the last two years I have been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome and my entire exgay (and Christian) identity has been thrown into doubt.

Aspies/Auties are known for rigid belief systems, a lack of sexual "ability", and a lack of ability to maintain relationships. My suffering seems to have been just the normal life of someone that is unaware that they have Asperger's Syndrome.

Was all my "sacrifice" and suffering meaningless? Is 20 years of a commitement to the exgay movement a complete waste of time?
