discovery zone for dating

Ok, so this is my first blog ever, on this website or anyother website so forgive my rough writing style. I joined this website in hopes of communicating with others, people who have AS or those who are involved with people with AS. I am currently dating a man who, although he has not been diagnosed with it, fits many other the characteristic of AS. So by joining this website I hope to better communicate with my boyfriend.
Although we have been together a year, somedays it is harder than others and I find myself having to excuse his actions/inactions, as well as defend my dating choice to friends and relatives. They can't get over the fact that I am dating someone so "weird" and without social skills. Well he does have some, they just didn't see it and thus labeled him "odd", which is code for someone who doesn't fit in (ei:negative choice).
Part of the problem we NT's might have is reminding ourselves to speak plainly and directly. No sarcasm, No idioms. People with AS have trouble reading into our flowery statements to find the facts. ("The facts, just the facts ma'm" would so go over my man's head as he doesn't get cultural references either) After years of navigating in the dating waters with Joe Average quoting movie lines or songs lyrics I find myself at a loss if I can't use cultural references, much less the subtle hints and flirting that goes hand in hand with dating.
Granted my guy is smart and I think he has learned to adapt somewhat in reading between the lines coupled within certain situations (hehe), but seriously there are days were it is a real struggle. Does anyone have any suggestions?
