Getting involved in constructive ways
posted at 11:01 pm on 04-12-2007

I haven't been on WP for most of the last week, but much of it is due to some new stuff that I'm getting involved with elsewhere. I'll be helping out a friend who needs to get caught up on her taxes; most of it is bookkeeping and spreadsheet work since a professional will do the actual tax forms. She is just now getting caught up on her finances and getting a consulting venture off the ground, but she's not terribly well organized. But like most Aspies, she's generous to a fault. She's also indicated an interest in using my artwork on a CD cover, and in a possible joint venture developing a brand new lighting control system for use in live music concerts. I'm also getting involved with one of the political campaigns; which one I won't say here since I don't want to start flame wars or bring politics into a "neutral" site. However, Nevada is now caucusing early in the season, and I expect to be involved in promoting my candidate through the caucus and hopefully in the general campaign that leads up to the November '08 presidential election. Funny how there is often LESS "office politics" in a political campaign, especially for the volunteers like myself! However, I'd hate to be a politician myself; things get really nasty and evil in there!

I feel for all the hurt
posted at 06:38 pm on 04-05-2007

Today I started looking at The Haven, and it's making me feel so sad, especially since I feel the pain of others very keenly, especially those who want to hurt themselves or commit suicide, or who are terminally angry with the world. (And they say that we Aspies have no empathy -- Hahaha!) I know what it's like all too well; I've been there myself. I know that I can't really give any answers here, as we all have to work out our own answers especially for anything this difficult. But it still leaves me feeling bad, all I can do is offer my personal support to another fellow human being.

Starting to get integrated here
posted at 05:58 pm on 04-04-2007

I've gotten some nice responses, and I've been able to welcome a couple of other new members. Those who think that we're cold, uncaring types, just don't understand how different our own "code" is vs. the neurotypical (non-Aspie) code. I do want to encourage other Aspies who are lonely to consider options for meeting other Aspies -- this community is definitely a good place to start. I am also very much against trying to "cure" AS per se, as it strikes me as similar to trying to "cure" gayness -- it's a part of who I am! However, some social skills training would be appropriate, just so we can deal with the rest of the world.

I'm new here, and glad to find a community of other AS people
posted at 07:36 pm on 04-02-2007

I'm new here, and glad to find a community of other AS people. Besides AS, I'm bipolar and have ADD, though both are under treatment with prescriptions. While I'm very intelligent and creative, I have a lot of trouble with "teamwork" (better known as "office politics"), so I'm currently on disability. My psychiatrist has encouraged me to look into an endeavor that I will enjoy, funded via Nevada Rehab and the Ticket to Work program, instead of taking on the stress and BS that's endemic in the traditional work environment. Since I have some established talent with visual design and artwork, as well as extensive experience with computers, I'm seriously looking into computer art with a possible sideline in occasional graphics and web-page design. Something else positive: I'm starting to make some new friends among other AS people, instead of butting my head against the wall trying futilely to impress neurotypicals. I've long felt like I'm somehow on the wrong planet(!); it's nice to know that I'm not alone.
