| I know it's a somewhat unusual interest for an aspie to have, but I'm very interested in baseball, specifically the Yankees. (I grew up in New Jersey). I also like advanced baseball statistics (like Win Shares, VORP, etc.) despite being not very good at math. I was just wondering if anyone else here shares an interest in baseball. If so, I'd like to talk. |

I love baseball! I live near the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York...but Cooperstown wasn't really the birthplace of
baseball. As a New Yorker, I am a true Yankees fan...there is nothing sweeter than Derek Jeter!
It gets crazy in late July when they have the new inductions into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. Last July, the actor Richard Gere was in Cooperstown since he grew up in North Syracuse, New York...and he was invited as a guest by Cal

| Over the last several years I got more into baseball despite the fact I'm not a sports fan at all. I'm a New York Yankees fan. I'm still upset over what happened to Joe Torre. He did not desire a extension like that. I'm glad he showed them by not taking it. I'm going to miss him managing the Yanks. It will take a long while to get use to Joe Girardi managing the team and the fact that Torre will be all the way in Los Angeles. |

Thanks for all the replies! It's good to find other aspie baseball fans here.
Vae: Congratulations on your team winning it this year (much as it pained me).
Zsazsa: Nice to see another Yankee fan. It's cool that you live near the Hall of Fame. I'd love to go but haven't been there (yet). Any current thoughts on the Yankees?
Plutonian_Persona: My sympathies. Maybe next year.
Redrock: It's nice to see another Yankee fan here. I disagree with you about Joe Torre, though. I don't think an offer which would have made him the highest paid manager in baseball was an insult. I'm glad that the team is going to have a new manager. Girardi is young, smart, and he seems to be more aware of statistics than Torre (a plus in my book). Torre did a lot of good things as manager, but he was not by any means infallible (pitching Jeff Weaver in a decisive World Series game?!).
Anyway, it was really good to hear from all of you. I've been told that my baseball interest is unusual for an aspie, so it's good to see that others share it. Do you guys have any favorite baseball books? Personally I really love "Moneyball" by Michael Lewis and "What Ever Happened to the Hall of Fame" by Bill James. |

Also a fairly big baseball fan here. I am a stat nut. Read BP , HardBall Times, BTF, etc. Read both of the books you mentioned.
Got into the whole sabermetric thing a couple years ago and read everything I could on it for a while. Now almost every stats article is old news to me, oh well. So it's no longer an obsession of mine.
BoSox fan here, have been since 86. I enjoyed this past WS victory, but didn't watch a lot of the playoffs because I invest too much emotionally into the team and it's too stressful. |

I love baseball! Where I grew up in the 60's I was the only girl who did. My first crush on a celebrity was on a baseball player, when the other girls were having crushes on singers. I had to be careful not to talk about it though.
My mom thought I knew everyone's batting average. I didn't, but even though she didn't know what AS was and I didn't have that particular trait she knew enough about people like me to think I might know that. She thought it was cool--I wish thought that it had been true. |

Speaking of the Yankees, I am starting the over/under on the first Girardi/player or Girardi/NY-Media blow up. His "my way or the highway" hard ass approach worked in Florida where there wasn't a player over 30 and noone really cared about the team. I really am curious to see whether he can handle it with the scrutiny of New York hovering over him.
I think May 15th is a good date to start with, and I'll take the under.

Please don't laugh, but I happen to be a long-time fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
I love older baseball. I'm talking 1968 and earlier. When the pitcher's mound was more of a mount, when pitchers came inside HARD with regularity. When you might only see two pitchers the entire game between the two teams. 500 homeruns was something special. Heck, 400 was pretty neat, too.

| Big baseball fan here. It's by far my favorite sport to watch. The Red Sox are my team, though I'm not from New England. My dad is a New Englander, however and has been a Red Sox fan his whole life, so I "inherited" my love for the Sox from him. I love the strategy involved in baseball and how much easier it is to follow than football, basketball, hockey, or soccer when both teams are playing offense and defense simultaneously. I can't PLAY the baseball (or softball) to save my life, but I love to watch it, especially when the Sox play. |
