My view for a few years now:
I can't hope that my love is reciprocated, so I'll help those people I happen to love, if they let me and I feel like doing it. In that case the deed is the reward in itself. I'm sure this sounds weird...
Then more lyrics. I take only an excerpt to emphasise my point, and also to play it safely regarding copyright. I recommend the whole song if you can get it.
Chris De Burgh: If You Really Love Her, Let Her Go
Oh she is like a bird, yearning for the winter wind.
If you let her go, she’ll come again in springtime.
But if you make her stay, and hold her freedom in your hand,
In the morning you will wake, and she’ll be gone away... |

My all-encompassing definition of love is
"will to understanding"
This is a conclusion I came to myself and it seems to work (in some sense) for most uses of the word "love."
Apparently it's not a new phrase though, so maybe others have said the same.

I really like those lyrics, korppi. I don't usually listen to C De B, but yeah, I feel that's true really.
When you love someone I think the tendency is to encompass them with yourself (clumsily put but I hope it makes sense) but there's nothing more stifling, and if someone does that to you, it feels claustrophobic. Everyone needs some space.
Yep, I'm going to check out the whole lyrics to that song now.

Love is feeling happier than its object of affection when that person loved is happy; feeling sadder than the one you love when he or she is feeling sad, etc. _________________ "No, I can't walk and chew gum at the same time...but, I'm amazing at each when done separately!" |

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self‑seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
Love never fails. _________________ TheZach

I have so many memories associated with that song and Night at the Roxbury. The original video just takes itself way too seriously, doesn't it? _________________ The machine does not isolate man from the great problems of nature but plunges him more deeply into them. -Antoine de Saint Exupéry |

When to the sessions of sweet silent thought,
I summon up remembrance of things past,
I sigh the lack of many a thing I sought,
And with old woes new wail my dear time's waste:
Then can I drown an eye (unused to flow)
For precious friends hid in death's dateless night,
And weep afresh love's long since cancelled woe,
And moan th' expense of many a vanished sight.
Then can I grieve at grievances foregone,
And heavily from woe to woe tell o'er
The sad account of fore-bemoaned moan,
Which I new pay as if not paid before.
But if the while I think on thee (dear friend)
All losses are restored, and sorrows end. |

It is said that "opposites attract" - maybe they really attract, but I don´t think that this type of love can last for a long time. I think that people have to be similar. I don´t say they have to be completely same but when they are similar they can better understand each other. You must admire the other person and take him/her as he/she is. That is love for me. Nothing is more horrible than to feel absolutely misunderstood |

| I wondered for a long time if I really loved my husband. I never had that 'warm fuzzy feeling' that is so commonly discribed in love, and felt like I was decieving him. After thinking about it for a long time I tried to imaging what it'd be like without him. I have a good imagination when it comes to thinking of how itfeels, and this struck me paticulary hard. I felt lonely, and sad, I missed talking with him, and wanted to be held in his arms. I realize now that love isn't a heartwrenching emotion that you feel the same as joy, but rather the feeling that brings on joy and happiness. I love my husband because I can spend the rest of my life happily at his side. |

| I dont see how the topic of what is love is an "adult issue". Shouldnt this thread be in the *Love and Dating* forum? |

| I don't see why it shouldn't be discussed in the 'in depth' forum. It is partly a philosophical question so you could argue that it should be in the philosophy forum too. You could probably make the case for a lot of the threads discussed here to be moved to other forums. I don't think there are any hard-and-fast rules about it. People just start threads where they feel they should go. This is a slower-moving forum than some, so threads tend to hang around a bit longer which gives more time for them to be discussed, which is also why I posted it here. |
