Granted my job is incredibly informal...I serve beer and sew sock monkeys at the same time...(at my multi-purposed performance space)

Last night we had this obnoxious girl who started rambling on to me about the problems she had with our donation system and ways in which she though it could be improved....THEN she orders two Shiners and proceeds to ask me if we served any beer that did not contain animal products....it was news to me that any did..(besides the thousands of tiny aphid bits that inevitably find their way in)

I said to her that we had been using the same donation system for 5 years without any problems...
And when she asked if we had any beer that did not contain animal products, i was totally stumped...and pointed out the two Shiners are what she ordered..implying that she should have asked that question before I opened the beer bottles if it was such a big concern...concidering her seeming 'knowledge that the Shiner Bock contains animal products...

I told her that if she had any problems with our beer containing animal products and the nature of our donation system..that she should take it up with the management....(me passing the buck because technically, I AM the management)...but I tried to flag down the (very drunk) Flakey..to see if he could articulate a better response....

...to which she responded that she was "just making conversation" Confused

That was the turning point for what turned into a lousy night of depression and sensory overload...

After that negative interraction she kept ordering box wine without tipping till I hid the box.

Sometimes I just hate people

and p.s.

http://www.veganvanguard.com/vegism/beer.html

Spoetzel(sp?) brewers aren't even listed here
in further research, I have found no indication as to whether or not Shiner is vegan

I can tell her where she can stuff her "no animal products" business and how high.

this is just my opinion but I notice alot in my own job that people test your limits they try to see if your offended and try to push it while looking the victim. Its like one time this guy was very rude to a coworker then said he was going to knock every tooth out of his mouth of course noone was there so when he went to punch the dude out for saying that management came in trying to contain the situation.

In the end I called the cops and asked them to escort him out which initially my manager pulled me aside and was like cops should not be called for this and I said yes they should I seen him threaten your employee and instead of donig the right thing getting him the hell outta here your blaming the employee. Shes like well I don't think cops should be pulled from a rape to handle this and I esponded there is enough cops in this city to accuratly be able to respond to a rape and take care of a individual who publically threatens others now what you should be more concerned about is checking that the perscription he gave for narcotics is legit (it wasn't... when they acutally looked at the thing.)

I've also had alot of problems where I am with customers saying under their breath or when the manager is not there curse words and the like. If they do I refuse to serve them plain and simple if people disrespect me they won't get served. Managers try to act like they can do something but they can't its in the rules that they try to not tell anyone that you can refuse to serve a customer anytime for any reason its mostly only used by management.

Alot of times if you show them you won't take it they will do a 360 in how they treat you for instance one day someone asked how much is a water hes a very rude guy who treats you like garbage if you let him. I said I dunno around a dollar and 30 cents or so and hes like go get one. I responded this is not Dairy Queen this ain't full service if you want the water go get it otherwise it won't appear by itself. Since that day he has been overly polite to me and I no longer get the harsh tone that most people are greeted with when he comes around.

Smile I once was threatened by a customer when I worked at Whole Foods...she threatend to "Jump over the counter and kick my ass" if there was any indication that I had tampered with her sandwich....(she was always ordering these rediculously picky sandwiches that were very easy to get wrong..and I must have gotten it wrong and was made to re-do it)

I was able to get her escorted from the premisis and banned from the store Smile ..this must have been over 10 years ago...

I'm sorry you are still not happy with your life P.
But you surround yourself with these people who seem to be dragging you down.
I'm not saying everyone who comes into HappyLand is an alcoholic, but from your description... Flakey is... and other people you have mentioned could very well be.

I worked in bars/clubs in San Angelo, Texas and Abilene, Texas years ago.
My family has it's share of alcoholics and drug abusers.
I have had friends and co-workers who have been the same... one really good paramedic who was my partner for a good long while at El Paso EMS, killed himself at the age of 42 through alcohol and drug abuse.

I have no use for bars and I have no use for people who spend hours sitting in them getting drunk.
I choose not to be around them during those times and I'm happier for it.
I wish you could find more happiness in your life somehow... but hanging around some of the people you are... doesn't do anything but bring misery to your life.

You can complain about this girl's attitude, but why do you expect anything different in a bar?... which from your description is what it sounds like.

You have talent and I have found a lot of neat things out about you over the short time I have been here on WP.
I really hate to see you do what I have seen so many others do with their lives. It never gets better that way.

You deserve to have a happier life P. I do hope you find it. Wink

yea what was how it should be handled and I'm sure they would have blamed the kid if I wasn't correct in the fact that it was an illegal perscription. I felt bad for the kid cause I'm sorry we live in New York you don't show people that they can't walk on you and they will do it at their leisure all the time.

yea I get what ya mean about that personally I've gone so extreme because of my family's personal problems with drugs, alcohol, and cigarettes that I became straight edge and its became so bad that if I see a woman drink. I can't look at her as attractive and it proves a hinderance for thats night's exploits if I'm with them so I've reverted to only dating girls who are straight edge like me.

See what happens? You work for Whole Foods and your clientele is among the nastiest because they're all "humankind is bad and they'd better dance to my tune or I will make them miserable all their lives."

Remnant, this happens in all areas of the work world and not just with people who espouse their devotion to the 'green life'.
I have had ample opportunity to be around plenty of non-'greenies' who were just as demanding and ignorant.

P, I know my words can be seen as harsh and all, but I am sympathetic to your strife.
Realistically though, being around people like that when they are consuming alcohol has never been a good experience in my life, and from your posts, it seems the same for you.

A disturbing expansion of this are what I call "Whinos in the Park".
These are charitable events held in a municipal park for the purpose of raising money for some organization in need.
It is promoted by serving wine and/or beer.
The issue I have with this is that the vast majority of people who go to these things are drinking more than one glass, not eating all that much, and driving away at the end.
So this sort of public drunkiness is OKAY when the 'well-to-do' want to party in the name of doing something charitable, but the next day when an officer finds a homeless person drunk in the park... this person gets arrested.

And I know what I am talking about here... I have seen it first hand more than once.
I stopped a friend at one of these because she could barely stand up straight and she was trying to drive her car away.
Luckily I got her out and someone was called to come pick her up.

This year we had one in a nearby town and the very next day I read in the police blotter of the local newspaper, a small remark of a transient who was cited for public intoxication without any mention of a disturbance.

Anyway, I'm not totally against alcohol, pot, or some other recreational 'mind-benders', just as long as it is done in a controlled environment where no one gets hurt... especially the kids.

SHFL is not a bar...we are a peformance and arts space that has beer and wine for donations...(we don't have liquor)...there was a big show last night....people getting drunk is inevitable at most big shows that happen everywhere and usually i can handle it....yeah there are alot of alcoholics in the art and music scene that I have been a part of practicly since childhood....

I just intended to rant about a particularly obnoxious customer who was putting me on the spot...and she wasn't really even drunk...

It can be tiresome to be around a buncha drunk people...yes it often puts me into sensory overload....and it can make me depressed...but it has always been a part of my life...and most likely always will be...i can still occasionally rant about annoying people who directly put me on the spot....

I actually only live and work with one alcoholic...and he is not drunk all the time...mainly just special occasions...

not to be rude and please understand that I'm not meant to be critical of you in any way shape or form. Life is too short for that theres so many experiences, emotions, and events that most people miss and then regret. If a person is not treating you right let them know and make sure they know its their responibility to change what is bothering you, small comprimises are ok but its not a fingers match and if the partner cannot change then its better to move on. Personally I'd rather be alone then have someone who was no good for me I got too much going on to worry about other people holding me back. This is just my personal opinion.

Customers.....ugh, give me a kid with meltdowns any day over some customer. I remember working at Mc Donalds and customer telling me how awful and expensive the coffee was. I remember working at a pizza resturaunt and getting yelled at because of the cost of a pzza...like I had something to do with that. Here's a good one...."I'll have one large pepperoni pizza, what goes on that?" I'd have to politly respond......"Pepperoni." "Why only pepperoni"? "Because you ordered a pepperoni pizza.""Well does it have cheese on it to?" "Yes." Well what about sausage?" "Only if you order it." "Well why do I have to order sausage." And then my boss tells me I spend to much time with the customer...OH MY GOSH. So I work with children....like em...even the hard ones....like em. But my poor children deal with customers...ahhhh the joy of retail.

Well, I do apologize for taking your post in a different direction than what you intended Sad

I suppose the issue I brought up just hits a sensitive spot in me based on my life experience.

Hope you're having better times now. Very Happy
