Teachers open minds to autism

EMU to add master's degree in brain disorder

December 27, 2007

BY ROBIN ERB

No one knows for sure how the brain of an autistic child works, but Ellen Mayle -- the mother of two 12-year-old autistic sons -- thinks she's got a pretty good idea.

Imagine, she tells her sons' frustrated teachers and principals, that you're sitting in class and your mouth has been duct-taped shut so you can't communicate. There's sawdust in your pants so you can't sit still. And the lights are flipping on and off, scattering your thoughts.

Hers is a bit of the understanding that Eastern Michigan University is trying to spread to Michigan's teachers.

Interesting... I know when I was 10-11-12 I was being mainstreamed into regular 5th and 6th grade classes in elementary school with 4th grade being a trial period. My parents told me the teachers that would be getting me the next year may not have been thrilled about me being in their class and that they anticipated problems with the school district as a result.

I was a challenge in those classes looking back I will admit, but of course back then (early 90's) their was not as much understood about it as today, and I think in their eyes I was seen as a trouble maker, someone who would impede learning and be difficult for the teacher.

BAH! I was a bit of a challenge, but I did just fine and I wonder what their reaction would be if i did just pop in and say hi, heh.
