I just saw the segment. It was very brief, but I think it was all right. Alex was on it, and he did a fine job of representing our online community. There was also a doctor who treats Asperger's patients who clarified that AS does not make people violent or "psychotic," and it was also mentioned that people with AS are likely to develop depression or other problems.
I'm curious, how did it come out that Will Fruend was a member of this site? Did someone here contact the police, or was it simply discovered during their investigation? |

I contacted the authorities, but they didn't contact the Los Angeles times. The media became aware of it after searching the internet. |

Other communities don't have as high a google pagerank as WrongPlanet (since they dont have as many people linking to them) so wrongplanet.net would naturally be the first thing the media found. |

But HOW in the world did the media know to go to the internet??? I mean, isn't that a little bit of a long shot? "Oh, I need to do a story about this Asperger guy who just shot two people... I think I'll do a google search!"
It's sounds a bit suspicious to me, to be honest. And that they HAPPENED to know who he was on here. I mean, I know he used a derivative of his real name. But that would take some time to search through the threads.
Even by googling William Freund and Asperger's, we're up first, but still, he never used his whole name. And these are from posts/articles after all this media frenzy.
They would have had to specifically know "WillFreund" in order to not have to do a LOT of wasteful searching.
Suspicious.

I'm not sure it matters how the media first came to Wrong Planet.
They are here now. So far, the reporting I've seen has been okay.

What time did it exactly air? and what time zone are you in?
I set my VCR to record from 6am to 7:30am central time since alex gave the time is eastern.
I fast forwarded thru it all and didn't see it. The first hour was mostly commericals and local news, the last half hour was devoted to mostly to the new supreme court nomination and prince charles trip to the US.
