Muay thai. I did a bit of BJJ, but I didn't enjoy it as much. I would rather knock someone out than roll around on the ground trying to get a chokehold on them.

I'd still advise you to hang in there with the JJ, that way you've got a grappling style to compliment your muay thai, so your prepared to strike OR grapple, whatever the situation requires. But that's just my advice though.

I did Zen Karate (cross of Shotokan/Tae Kwon Do/Kickboxing) in Canada for a number of years. It was my "aspie" hobby that I loved and tried so hard to be an expert in. I went to tournaments and actually made some awesome friends. Everyone was really nice!

Then I had to move to the USA and could never find a good enough school here in Georgia. Too many yuppy belt factories to satisfy my aspie taste. Sad Sad Sad Sad Sad

I'd like to get back into it but I'm still looking.

Kumdo to me has slowly started to become a life style for me due the teachings from my Sabumnim Young J. Park and higher belts like GMU Kumdo Club President 1st Dan Andy Jung.

Hey I was just wondering if their are any other aspies out on WP who do a martial art.

I have done Kumdo for a year as of the 29 of this month.

I've been into karate my whole life, pretty much. Everyone with AS should think about doing a martial art, both for self protection and to help develop motor skills.

I practiced a Korean form called Pa Sa Ryu for about two years. My sensei was actually the one who founded the style, a man by the name of Kang Rhee. (He trained Elvis Presley back in the day, so it was kind of cool.) The belt hiearchy was thus.. White, Yellow, Blue, Green, Purple, Brown, Red, and then Black. I got up to blue belt, but then I stopped because my family moved, and I haven't been back since. I still enjoy martial arts, however.

Wait wouldn't be yellow, green, purple, blue, brown, red then the nine levels of black. Confused

Sabumnim would also be the Korean word for Master.

In Kumdo its white, yellow, green, purple, blue, brown, red, red one, red two, then 1st Dan to 9th Dan for the black belts.

Anyone know who Denis Kang is? He is an MMA fighter who fought in Pride FC and K-1 Hero's. I got to train with him on Saturday (he did a seminar at my gym), then he went out with us and we saw UFC 82 together... it was great!

I was at my happiest/calmest when I did Muay Thai. I had to give it up to go to uni, and have since developed problems with my hip joints which prevents me from going back Sad
I hope to get some reassurance next week from the orthapedic specialist that I can start going again. Fingers crossed.

I actually saw the Human Weapons episode dealing with Muay Thai and I found it pretty interesting.

Well true do it was an hour and they only train for five days.
It might just brought more attention toward the art I think.

yeah, thats probably true... but it didnt lessen the disappointment that everyone involved with mt expected from it.

i mean, its quite clear that you cant encompass the simplistic beauty of it all, its cultural value, what role it plays socially in thailand etcetera... in a one-hour-episode or a five-day stay. but then, it was utterly ridicolous to have a host whos sold as someone versed in the whole martial arts thing comment that he hadnt thought of turning the hip over when kicking in all the years of his training... like, DUH!

so, ultimately, its the question whether any publicity is better than no publicity at all or rather have no publicity than crappy publicity.

I know what you mean when the Mason Kumdo Club went to 2007 William and Mary Kendo Tournament everyone thought we were easy-picking and instead we took the no rank division, third in the 1st/2nd Dan division and second in team. Afterwards somebody went and complain about us for training too hard and mean things about us. Now thats crappy publicity but we were put on the map because of William and Mary.
