Tom
Age:
56
Location:
Georgia
When did you discover AS?
Fairly recently, in the last year
Do you have other psych diagnoses?
mainly depression off & on, social anxiety
Do you have a degree?
yes
Kids?
no
Job?
yes, in medical field
Relationship with significant other, past or present?
yes, long term
Anything else you feel is pertinent:
I am just finding out about AS. I have some seemingly classic symptoms, such as lack of eye contact and social problems, obsessive thinking. I was called Lurch in H.S. due to my monotone responses and lack of expression. I loved cars (makes & models, not how to fix them), knowing all about businesses and drawing buildings as a kid and still enjoy them now, but didn't go into any of those businesses. Anyway, Thanks, I hope to learn a lot here. |

Do you have a degree? no
Kids? no, probably won't ever have them (don't like the idea of me being a father)
Favorite music, other than NIN; Genesis, Styx, Fleetwood Mac, Renaissance, Jethro Tull, Journey, Black Sabbath, Rush, etc
Job? no
Relationship with significant other, past or present? no...women don't like me and at times I am not too fond of them either (NT ones mainly)
its all a game, a stupid crappy game I don't like
Plans for the future? uhh only dying one day

What is your first name? Ed
Age: 63
Location: Central Massachusetts
Current perseverations: rock band Max Creek (I've been following them for 18 years), computers, and putting the two together by converting old audio cassettes of their shows to cd's, and uploading them to the web for other "Creek Freaks" to enjoy
When did you discover AS? 5-6 years ago, after reading a sidebar in Time Magazine describing the syndrome. Diagnosed by the Veteran's Administration shortly after I suggested the diagnosis to them.
Do you have other psych diagnoses? Other than the usual depression? No, I've seen lots of Psychiatrists and Psychologists, none were ever able to come up with any diagnosis at all, I was a complete mystery to them.
Do you have a degree? No. I've tried college 4 times, to no available. I'm unable to sacrifice today for tomorrow's gain.
Kids? No
Favorite music, other than NIN Other than Max Creek? Classical (especially choral), Older Broadway shows, Rock, folk, and others. I dislike modern jazz, though Dixieland is fun. Even with all that (and I have an iPod filled with it), I mostly listen to the news on our local all-news station.
Job? Yes... I still work with those old IBM 80-column punch cards (each with a single frame of 35-mm microfilm in it). I sort them on an old IBM sorter, and also scan the images.
Relationship with significant other, past or present? no
Plans for the future? No. I don't plan life, just live it as it happens. I don't see much chance of a sudden (or even gradual) improvement in my circumstances. My motto is "Whatever will be, will be."
Anything else you feel is pertinent: Well, I wear sandals all the time, even in Winter (except at home, where I go around barefoot), and I have a fairly long ponytail, not bad for a 63-year-old. So people notice that I'm weird, even before they talk to me. Like most of us, I have very strong opinions, which I am positive are all correct.
I have started collecting Social Security, and only work three days/week. By working Tue-Thur I manage to eliminate those awful Mondays and those long Fridays. Makes my work week so much more bearable!
I love to feed the squirrels (and bluejays) peanuts... Go through 15 pounds/week. (see them at my website http://scoogy.com/wildlife/new_squirrels/index.html ) |

First name is Jill, age 45, live in S. CA, My current perseveration is dogs (I am a breeder, and show them) and chickens (which I am researching before purchasing).
I teach special ed, this is my 5th year teaching. I started in a kindergarten autism class and was immediately fascinated. I was just diagnosed last August - which require immediate research and perseveration - and blew the due date on my Master's thesis. I had a previous diagnosis of ADD.
I also have a specialty in international taxation but was pretty much unemployable (the social stuff, you know) so had to change careers. I like teaching, but am about to get fired again - the social stuff AGAIN - I am a good teacher; my students learn and learn to test well, but the adult social stuff at work is very difficult.
I have one 24 yr old daughter who also has AS.
I recently (2 1/2 yrs ago) got married for the second time. I am amazed by it...... he is the most patient man on the planet.
It really is a relief to be diagnosed. I can learn to stop beating myself up because I "don't get it". I know I just have to keep trying, but at least now I know WHY. _________________ Do not meddle in the affairs of Dragons for you are crunchy and taste good with catsup. |
